Great Adventure!

For Californians, this was a great way to experience the best of the North York Moors in early August. Wish we could remember the name of the young man who guided us through the moors, even jumping out of the van to show us how quick and low flying the grouse are presenting a challenge for the shooters who would be stalking them during the next weeks. He was extremely knowledgable and friendly even adding one last stop at St. Peter and St. Paul in Pickering, home of the famous medieval frescoes! We had picture perfect weather for walking the grounds of the beautiful remains of Whitby Abbey on the North Sea as well as a stroll through the colorful town of Whitby. The steam train ride on the North Yorkshire Moors RR gave us a view of a wooded section of the moor. It was a grand day!

Whitby and Steam Train

We had a great day despite the rain, we all got dropped off at the Abbey then walked down the 199 steps into the town. Had fish and chips gluten free for lunch so good to be able to do, so thank you Magpie Cafe. Then we went to Goathland for our steam train trip. Along the way to Whitby we went through the moors and learnt about them , and through quaint villages . Great knowledgeable guide. Fun day

Great way to see beyond the city

Chris, our tour guide was very knowledgeable. It was a very small group, our family of 4 and another family of 3, so it was like a personal tour. The towns we visited were beautiful, could have spent days in them, and the drive, countryside, and moors were breathtaking. It was an all day tour, but could be even longer As there was so much to see.

We really enjoyed this day trip. The company uses small busses and the groups are small. We love that. Our guide was on time, organized, informative and always clear about instructions. He loves the district and it shows. we loved all the information of how and why the towns were named. I will really encourage my friends to use this company.

I did this trip at the start if the summer holidays. It was a busy day. Enjoyed the stop at Whitby and could of stayed there longer. The steam train was also good and just the right amount of time. Lots of great views of Yorkshire from the mini bus and train as well as walking around at the stops. Great day out.

Great Day Away Trip From York
Elizabeth M

Someone recommended that I take a day trip to Whitby and when I was looking to get there by public transit was not going to be possible in the time that I had So when I stumbled on this tour I booked. Am I ever glad that I did! There was a small group of us [just 8] so our tour guide Matt was able to keep track of us all very easily. We had a great day stopping in Helmsley for about 45 minutes just long enough to wander through this beautiful little market town then we went on to Whitby arriving a little earlier than normal which was great for us so we had almost a full three hours there. Matt and our bus driver [Brian I believe] drove us through Whitby and pointing out various points of interest and then they drove us right up to the Abbey so we did not have to walk up the steps. The Abbey, a ruin, is beautiful and the views from the top of the harbour and the town and out to the sea are stunning. Whitby it’s self is beautiful as well. So after spending some time at the Abbey I wander down the 190 or so odd steps and walk through old cobblestone streets twisty Windee and I bought myself the pre-requisite fish and chip lunch, and sat out in the harbour watching people come and go. When we left Whitby we went to Goathland Where we caught the steam train to Peterborough. Our bus met us there and we wandered back to York. We did take a small side trip to another Abbey which I unfortunately can’t recall the name. A beautiful little ruin right on the edge of a river. We were delivered back to Wiard drop off point in the shadow of York minster. All in all a fantastic day and Matt regaled us with tidbits of history and lore. If you are considering taking this trip, then do it!

Thanks for this great, comprehensive review. I'm delighted to read how you enjoyed every part of the day. The last abbey was Kirkham Priory... It's a lovely place for a final stop in the countryside before returning to York.

Yorkshire by a local

We had Chris as our guide. He grewup in the area and had lots of facts and stories to add to the trip. The moors heater was not in bloom, but Chris knew all the small local roads and villagaes, Whitby is a beautiful city, the sea port was busy and lovely. Dracula's Whitby Abbey is outsting. Chris made sure we got a ride on the Steam train from Goatland to Pickering. All in all it was a great day our. Do get some fish and chips in Whitby.
