Superb Experience

The tour was wonderful start to finish. Jason was a very knowledgeable and friendly guide who really had the most contagious zest for life. We truly enjoyed all the food we had and were very happy with the amount and quality of history that was shared with us. As a huge bonus, the gluten free options for the person with a gluten allergy in our party were really great and equally as appetizing as the regular food items. I definitely recommend this tour (and Jason!!)!

This will be my 2nd time taking this tour( 1st time was Pre Covid) Sonora is a Fabulous Tour Guide! Knowledgeable, Energetic, & Friendly! 1st stop & Meet at Iconic Ben's Chili Bowl for a half smoke! Delicious! We did get Our Steps In! We need it to walk off the Yummy Food! Next stops were Ethiopian & Cuban restaurants! And then Ice Cream! The History of U= Street was fascinating! We really enjoyed the African American Civil War Memorial & the Knowledgeable Marcus Who Taught Is the History! This is such an important tour! Take It!!

Darlene, thank you so much for keeping us in mind when it came time to show your family around DC! Maybe next time you're in town we'll be able to reveal the hidden history of Georgetown or Old Town Alexandria. Thank you for such a great review!

Iconic Black History & Food Tour

We loved every bit of this tour! The historical places we visited that were rich in culture. Our favorite stop was Ben's Chili Bowl, the art murals, the Black Civil War Memorial in front of the first black mason building. Seeing the first black owned businesses that made DC was iconic!

Not a Food Tour - Beware!
MichaelA_W
, Apr 2022
This was marketed as a ""food, history, and cultural tour," but it was not a food tour at all. We left after 2 hours and 45 minutes having sampled only 2 venues. The guide, Jason, was eloquent and passionate about the neighborhood, but the lack of quantity and diversity in food samplings was extremely disappointing. Definitely not worth $100+ per head.

We always appreciate hearing from our guests, Michael. Our food tour is structured a little differently than most in that while we have larger tastings at fewer stops, each tasting we offer helps to tell the story of DC. Not only that, it helps support Mary and Stefan's mission of pouring back into the community we love. We're so sorry you missed out on tasty Cuban pastries and delicious ice cream, but maybe we'll catch you on your next trip to DC!

Great experience filled with fun, food and family

This was a great tour and Jason was able to make it that much more special for our family of eight. As an African-American, I was a little hesitant about a white guy telling the African American experience, but he did it with such grace, style and sensitivity. Jason was truly passionate and proud of this history and made it evident that this is American history. He kept everyone engaged in spite of the cold weather. Jason was very accommodating for my 81 year-old mom and even gave her his jacket. The nuggets of history that he shared with us was great conversation later that evening at the family dinner table. Marquette Milton showing up as a Union soldier was a surprise treat! He was filled with so much information and it was a pleasure watching Jason and Marquette go back and forth about the knowledge and things that they've learned about the history in this area. The food was delicious & very filling & accommodated me as a vegetarian. Jason also later followed up with ideas of places to have dinner during our vacation. I look forward to doing the Georgetown food tour with Jason on my next DC vacation.

Elgin, we appreciate your honesty about your initial hesitancy to see someone who doesn't look like you telling the story of Black Broadway. However, it is exactly as you said: Black history IS American history, and needs to be taught to everyone regardless of color. DC history hits particularly close to home for Jason as a native Washingtonian, and we know he takes care of guests as thoughtfully as he would his own mother. As far as Marquette goes, he is one of the hidden gems of the African American Civil War Museum and you are definitely blessed to have been graced with his knowledge and graciousness as well. Thank you for this fantastic review, and we hope to be able to share the hidden history and flavors of Georgetown with you soon!
