Hired driver more than a tour
Eleanor_E
, Jan 2021
The experience was more having a personal driver with knowledge of the area than a tour. That being said, it was great to have a driver as the town would be hard to get around without someone to take you where you need to go. All the sites on the tour you did yourself, which makes it hard to get history and background while you are touring the mummy museum, the mine, etc. It was great having lunch and chatting with the tour guide.
I might just hire a driver for the day if it is cheaper.

Guanajuato and Delores Hidalgo in one trip

Excellent tour of Guanajuato. We were staying in San Miguel de Allende for several nights and were interested in seeing other cities in the area. It’s about 2 hours between cities, so plan for a full day.
Our guide Fabrizio showed up right on time at our hotel to pick us up for our private tour. As a native of Guanajuato he knew all the right spots and side roads to get us around this very tight and crowded city.
We weren’t interested in going down into the silver mine or the torture museum, so he adjusted the schedule to add on areas we were interested in seeing. The Teatro was beautiful. And ask your driver to save time for your visit to the Diego Rivera home and museum. It’s very well done and is far better than the crowded Frida Kahlo house in Mexico City.
Since we had additional time, we took the long route back to San Miguel de Allende and made a stop in the city Delores Hidalgo. If you are looking for pottery, there are many pottery places just outside downtown. The ride through the mountains from Guanajuato to Delores Hidalgo is worth the diversion alone. Absolutely breathtaking scenery. But caution - the winding ride along the mountain roads is not for the faint of heart. But our competent driver Fabrizio got us through without a hitch.
Enjoy!

This was a private tour and thus suited our needs. Guide/driver was friendly and spoke good English. We saw a variety of sights. Very nice experience overall.

Fun day in Guanajuato.

We had a wonderful driver Fabrizio, who was very attentive. He was from Guanajuato and knew a lot. He was especially familiar with all the tunnels and driving on VERY narrow streets in his new VW.

Great Tour; great guide!

This was a great tour! Our guide, Carlos, was wonderful - he obviously loves his city and is proud to show it off. He was especially helpful in "customizing" our trip - sharing options and helping us hone in on what would be most interesting for us. We love history so we started at the museum (a great stop if you speak some Spanish - no English signs or guides). The we saw several sites including old mines and churches, stopped for some great photo ops, and ended with an hour on our own to walk the beautiful, historic downtown area. Perfect day and we'll definitely be back to Guanajuato!

We Loved It All

My wife and I had a wonderful day in Guanajuato! Fabricio, our tour guide/driver was a native of Guanajuato who was very proud of his city--in fact, he asked us several times if we preferred San Miguel de Allende or Guanajuato, all the while smiling and telling us how much he loves his city.
We visited the Statue of Pipila and then took an incredible route down into the city. The street was amazingly narrow, twisty, steep, and long! Fabricio then drove us through the mind boggling maze of tunnels that are totally reminiscent of some of the older subway systems in the USA (Boston's in particular).
We visited the Mummies next. The Mexican culture has a very healthy way of regarding death and thinking about what it means. The Mummies brightly underline those cultural beliefs.
The Museo Boca Mina San Ramon was another highlight of our tour. It's a beautiful setting and the walk down into (and up out of) the mine was a superb cardio workout,
Next stop was the Valenciana Church of San Cayetano. With spectacular views and and altars that are bedecked with gold as well as enormous paintings by Luis Momay, the church is magnificent and awe inspiring..
We had the lunch I have yet had in Mexico in the Jardin de la Union--the lovely park that Guanajuatons refer to as A Piece of Cheese due to its shape. Great spot for people watching while enjoying delicious food.
We pushed on to the Museo y Casa de Diego Rivera. What impressed us most about the art displayed in this museum was the remarkable variety of artistic styles that Rivera studied and produced in his life. You could feel the presence of his genius.
Our final stop was at the dam that finally stopped the floods that Guanajuato suffered periodically. The dam and the aforementioned tunnels were how the city controlled the waters.
It was a long but fun day. Fabricio was great, the city was fascinating, and we give our highest recommendation for this tour.
