Barrio Escalante

Uncover secrets of daily life and folkloric legend in San Jose with this captivating evening tour. Connect with your guide at Morazán Park where we will learn post-colonial Costa Rican history. Your tour continues with a walk through San Jose’s historic streets to view architectural highlights in the glow of twilight. Stroll through Spain Park to view the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which boasts ties to Andrew Carnegie. You’ll also see the National Distillery and the striking metallic building at Morazán Park, constructed atop swamps in the 1800s. Finish your walk at a local artisan market inside the beautiful National Park, where you’ll have the opportunity to purchase handmade souvenirs. We’ll continue to charming Barrio Escalante, one of the oldest residential areas in San Jose. The "barrio" as locals call it, was first a coffee farm but by the 1950's became the favorite neighborhood for the economic and political elites of the time. Nowadays, Barrio Escalante has reinvented itself and is now home to many up and coming restaurants and at night is a favorite meeting spot for locals and visitors alike.

The evening will end with a contemporary traditional meal at a hip local restaurant that is very popular with locals and offers a sampler of traditional Costa Rican pub fare.

Between your tasty three-course meal, and wines that go down a treat, you’ll be ending the evening feeling every bit the San Jose local.

An insightful learning adventure

Really enjoyed this culture and history heavy tour. Malo is a passionate, experienced, incredibly knowledgeable guide who shared with us so much about San Jose and Costa Rica. None of us spoke significant Spanish and Malo’s English was great- while teaching us some useful phrases along the way. Started with a drink, had a slow paced walk for about two hours hearing so much, and finished with a delicious and filling meal. We had a few great choices and the restaurant was kindly so adjustable to a small food allergy. Two others joined my husband and I and it was a perfect small group evening experience. 10/10 would do it again.

Cultural tour not really food tour

It was a great cultural tour but I wouldn’t consider this a food tour. We walked for 2 1/2 hours and learned lots of cool stuff, but we didn’t eat until the very end. It was a good experience but eat something before hand!

Gabriel was the best tour guide ever! He had so much knowledge about the history of San Jose. Being a native of Costa Rica was definitely a plus but he genuinely loved sharing it’s history. The pup he took us too was great! And the dinner was excellent! After dinner to assure we got home safely Gabriel, our tour guide walked back with us to the Hotel. What great service!

We enjoyed our city experience with our tour guide Juan. He was very informative and gave us so much history information on San Jose and Costa Rica. He pointed out and explained many historical buildings, where historical buildings use to be, and statues. Our tour ended with a wonderful meal.

Gabo was great! Very knowledgeable and friendly, and even took the time out of his evening to escort another couple to an extra location after the end of the official tour.
