Meet your guide and small group of no more than 15 at a central location in San Ignacio Town, and begin with an expedition to Xunantunich, one of Belize’s largest and most impressive archaeological sites. Learn about the history of the ancient Mayan city that was once home to up to 10,000 people and formed an important Mesoamerican trading hub. Explore the ruins of palaces, plazas, and ball courts, and climb to the top of the main stone temple for views across the border into Guatemala and above the rainforest canopy. Keep an eye out for wild black howler monkeys swinging through the trees.
Midday, recharge with a picnic lunch, and walk to the nearby launch point on the Mopan River. Gear up with a provided helmet, paddles, and life vest, and set off down the river in a kayak, at first enjoying the scenery of passing Belizean villages on a relatively calm stretch. Then, get your adrenaline pumping as you navigate class I river rapids with the help of your guide. The river also winds through the surrounding jungle, providing a scenic perspective on the native landscape.
After reaching the end of your Mopan River journey, relax on the ride back to the original departure point in San Ignacio.

Itinerary
After hotel pickup in San Ignacio in the morning, it’s just a 15-minute drive down the Western Highway aboard your air-conditioned vehicle. When you reach the town of San Jose Succotz, board a wooden ferry for the short trip across the Mopan River. Let your guide inform you about the ferry’s interesting hand-crank technology, which dates back to the 19th century. As you cross the emerald waters of the river, look for large green iguanas under the foliage or lazing on the forested riverbank
