Overview

Live this adventure paddling with us through an enchanted mangrove forest that leads to Laguna Grande where you will witness the unique natural phenomenon called Bioluminescence, a light produced by a living organism, specifically a microscopic plankton named Pyrodinium bahamense which is responsible for the Glowing Bay Adventure. Please remember that bioluminescence is a natural phenomenon and the intensity (brightness) is unpredictable and may vary from one day to another. On days when light pollution is high, we use a tarp to eliminate and/or block the illumination of the moon, allowing us to better appreciate bioluminescence. IMPORTANT NOTICE. ALL ODD-NUMBERED GROUPS OR SOLO KAYAKERS WILL BE PAIRED UP DURING THE TOUR.

We are located inside The Kayak Village, Las Croabas Puerto Rico. Look for the yellow tent. Check-in time starts 30 minutes before departure time.

  • Confirmation will be received at time of booking, unless booked within 12 hours of travel. In this case confirmation will be received as soon as possible, subject to availability

  • Not allowed for child's under 6 years old.
  • Not allowed for pregnant travelers.
  • Maximum weight limit per person is 240lbs.
  • Travelers should have a moderate physical fitness level
  • Not allowed for travelers with back problems.

This was a great family trip. We had a lot of fun. The hardest part was getting back around the inexperienced kayakers that couldn’t paddle against the current. Take a headlight with you. Awesome experience. So beautiful.

We enjoyed this so much. They kayaking out to the bay was very peaceful and enjoyable. The bay was beautiful. With the stars above and the bioluminescence in the water, it was amazing. The only thing I would change is to spend more time in the bay. I would have loved to kayak around the bay and really experience the bioluminescence longer. We would definitely recommend adding this to your trip!

Would NOT recommend. I had done the bio-trip before and this was nothing like it. Be prepared for an awful stench as you arrive at the location. And I do not mean the smell of sea and fish I mean stench. Be prepared for life jackets that smell moldy and have just been returned from the prior participants and you were given the exact same equipment within 5 minutes no sanitation nothing they smell moldy. Be prepared for guides that barely instruct you. Be prepared to walk out into the middle of the lake or whatever that is 4 ft deep in normal clothing just to board the Kayak. Be prepared for never being sure who is in charge of the adventure. Be prepared to finally get on to the bioluminescent bay, and waste 10 minutes while the guides string up 30 kayaks and proceed to give you a nasty dripping smelly tarp and expect you to get under it, four kayaks together, under a smelly drippy just generally disgusting tarp , to actually View the algae at work. I found the tour generally to be unprofessional, smelly, and completely devoid of any hygiene, leadership, or enjoyment. Mind you I have done this trip before and this was my mistake booking with this company, of which, I would never recommend to anyone.

This was a magical experience start to finish. (Ok, maybe wading through the shallow water to the kayaks at the start was not so magical, but everything else about the adventure was.) The team was super well organized, and our guides Talia, Kenny, Benin, Selix and Pedro were friendly, informative, clear, and funny. Paddling in the dark was fun for our entire group of relatively inexperienced kayakers. In fact, it was a highlight that almost matched the awe-inspiring magic of the bioluminescence. We were concerned about mosquitoes in the mangroves. We did not encounter a single mosquito. Another advantage of going well after sundown. I had read reviews that complained about navigating through the channel, but I can’t understand how it could be possible to have a hard time as there is only one path and It’s easy enough for a beginner. Even though we went after dark, we followed the lights of the kayaks ahead of us, and the guides were available when people got “stuck”. I would love to do this again. It was amazing. PS bring a change of clothes, and don’t forget dry underwear!!

My wife and I had a great time. The kayak ride through the mangroves was awesome! It would have been nice if there was a little more light to see our soundings, but the tour guides were awesome and very funny. That made the experience more enjoyable.

Fun experience, but water doesn’t actually glow

The tour was fun, but keep in mind that it’s not quite as described. The bioluminescent isn’t much, but the kayaking experience through the mangrove trees was beautiful, and once we were out in the open waters after dark, was gorgeous. Overall, it was a fun experience, but the we saw “sparks” in the water vs. glowing.

We had a 6:45 tour and guides gave an overview before. They were very helpful and informative. We were in a group of about 15. Other tour companies had groups of like 30 which is way too many. The kayaking was fun going thru the mangroves and then out to the bay. The bioluminescent was very visible when we went

This was a great time. The guides were extremely helpful (Kenny, Jenny, Gary, and two others). They help you get out there give you a tarp to put over you in the lake so you can see the bioluminescence even on a bright night. Save some strength for the trip back as you’re going against the current. The canal out to the lake can get a bit crowded and might be tricky if you haven’t kayaked before but the guides will help.

Really dark 1.5 mile paddle out to the bay and then 1.5 mile return was certainly memorable (mostly in a good way). Seeing the glowing micro organisms in the dark of night was outstanding!

The staff on the tour were great, the kayaking was a fun adventure in the dark and it was really neat to see the bioluminescent bay even if it wasn’t that vibrant (lots of light pollution, they had to use the tarp which we didn’t mind but something for potential visitors to be aware of). The only critique we have is just that it felt like the group was too big. There were just so many kayaks to wrangle, mix that with the fact that there are many other companies doing the same tours at the same time resulting in a lot of water traffic and it becomes less of a fun kayak in the dark and more of a mission to just make it to the bay and back. Overall would still recommend but we wish we’d have known it would be so busy.

Such a fun night - the kayak in was easy and peaceful. The way back was against the wind so not as restful but still great. You will def get wet so dress accordingly! One more thing crossed off my bucket list!
