Returns to original departure point
After morning pickup from select Phoenix hotels, get comfortable as you travel in a climate-controlled van into the rugged Sonoran Desert. Relax as your guide expertly navigates the rough terrain as you follow the Apache Trail at the base of the Superstition Mountains.

Designated the first ‘Historic Highway’ in Arizona, the Apache Trail started out as a footpath used by native Americans to cross the Superstition Mountains. The Apache Trail later became a stagecoach route with stops like the former gold mining town of Goldfield, which underwent a boom and bust in the late 1890s. Today the ghost town's western-themed attractions offer insights into the West's history. You can see authentic 19th-century artifacts in Goldfield’s Historic Museum, step into Lu Lu’s Bordello to learn about the lives of female pioneers, and try panning for gold.

Next up, enjoy gliding around Canyon Lake aboard a legendary steamboat named Dolly. Hear live narration during the 6-mile (10-kilometer) cruise and keep an eye out for bald eagles, big horn sheep and other desert wildlife in the surrounding volcanic cliffs.

After your steamboat ride, stop to purchase lunch (own expense) and visit Tortilla Flat, a tiny town with eccentric charms including a festively decorated saloon. The town motto is ‘The Town Too Tough To Die’ and its official population is six people. Hear about local legends like the Lost Dutchman Mine and other regional history.

Your fun and fascinating full-day tour ends with returns to your Phoenix hotel.

Boat cruise

Like all day tours, I wished I had more time in some places. That being said, I never felt rushed. I wanted a tour that was a bit laid back and got it. Yet. If I'd felt more energetic I could've had that as well. Fun group of people and wonderful guide helped as well.

Mike K was our guide and he was great. He gave us plenty of time to do everything including the Superstition Mountain Museum and Goldfield Ghost Town. The boat left earlier than usual so we had to have quite an early lunch at Tortilla Flat but the food was delicious. We had a big horn sheep run across the road right in front of us which was amazing as we didn't see many on the boat trip. We finished everything ahead of schedule so Mike took a different route into town to show us a few more things. It was my last day in Phoenix and was a great way to finish the holiday! Would highly recommend this trip.

We had a great time on this tour. Our tour guide Wayne was one of the most knowledgable guides we have ever had. He literally didn't stop talking from the minute we were picked up until he dropped off at the end of the trip but we had no problem with this as he was very informative. Our first stop was an old western movie set where there is some good photo opportunities. The next stop was a reconstructed ghost town called Goldfield. It had everything from a bar to a gift shop, ice cream parlour and activities. After driving through the valley along some very winding roads our third stop was lunch at Tortilla Flat. There was some great food on offer and you can even try some prickly pear ice cream. The conclusion of the tour was a steamboat cruise on Canyon Lake. You will get to see lots of big horn sheep and eagles on the charming 90 minute narrated tour. We would recommend this tour to anybody that enjoys the Wild West and has an interest in flora and fauna in this area. Be aware that the tour may be cancelled or rescheduled to another day at short notice if there are not enough people on the day you have booked.

We had a very good tour. The curvy roads were haunting but made the trip worthwhile. Tortilla flats is special! Steamboat was okay but limited sights. The bald eagle nest was the highlight.

Did this trip on my own as my travel companion did not want to go with me. And I have to say I would do this one again in a heartbeat. The Apache Trail was interesting and the little town we stopped in for lunch was awesome. But the steamboat cruise was truly wonderful. We saw so many animals up on the rocks - mountain goats, eagles, and my personal favorites the little coots that swam next to the boat. You will not be disappointed with this trip that's for sure.
