Enjoy midmorning pickup by coach from your Oaxaca hotel and kick off your day of sightseeing at Monte Alban, a UNESCO site located on a mountaintop boasting panoramas of the city and Oaxaca Valley.

Spend about 2.5 hours at the archaeological site. Your guide takes you around the complex, including the Grand Plaza, a large open area on the flattened plateau. Hear engaging facts about Zapotec history and culture as you gaze at ceremonial platforms, including a series of rock carvings called The Dancers (Los Danzantes). You’ll see some of Monte Alban’s 170 tombs, whose excavations revealed a range of paintings and stone carvings. Visit pyramids, temples, altars and the I-shaped ball court constructed in 100 BC. Make your way up the South Platform (Plataforma Sur), a large area known for its wide staircase and great views.

Next, head to San Antonio Arrazola, a tranquil town at the base of Monte Alban. For about 45 minutes, stroll through the town and admire the local folk art, such as the world-renowned woodcarvings from the copal tree called alebrijes depicting a fantastic zoology of mythical creations and monsters.

In the traditional town of Cuilapam de Guerrero, swing by the Cuilapam Convent, a 16th-century Dominican convent known for its unfinished basilica and capilla abierta, or open chapel. Learn about this historical colonial feature aimed at encouraging larger numbers of indigenous people for conversion to Catholicism.

After refueling with lunch (own expense), wrap up your sightseeing in San Bartolo Coyotepec. Visit the 16th-century San Bartolo Coyotepec Church, the Oaxaca State Museum of Popular Art (MEAPO) and a craft market displaying the work of more than a dozen families. Learn about this town known for its black pottery (barro negro), unique ceramics made locally since pre-Columbian times.

Your full-day tour ends with drop-off at your hotel in Oaxaca in the evening.

Antonio is a great guide.

Be ready for a full day! Antonio is very passionate and knowledgeable about the sights to be seen during the tour. Wear comfortable shoes and be ready to purchase drinks along the way. Due to the pandemic there will be changes such as the monastery being closed to the public but Antonio will still bring you there (just outside) for a quick history of the place. Of course the main attraction is the Monte Alban site and it was not disappointing.

Best Specialty Oaxaca Tour
Miguel_M
, May 2021
Wow! What a way to see ancient Oaxaca! Monte Alban is the most preserved and famous archeological site and its well-worth visiting. This tour even takes you some really cool little towns that specialize in specific artistry like one that makes black pottery and the other that makes hand-carved wooden figurines called Alebrijes! This tour was amazing ! Highly recommend it !

This was a great tour to experience Monte Albán and artisan villages in the area. Going to an alebrijes workshop in Arazola was particularly interesting. Our tour guide was top-notch.

Our guide Antonio was very good, very knowledgeable about the places, give a lot of information . The first part of the trip( visiting Monte Alban) was amazing, second part( visiting some villages) -boring, and just took so much time.

Excellent Tour of Monte Albán & Craft Workshops, Even During COVID
Emily
, Feb 2021
I loved this tour!! Second time I had the wonderful Antonio as my guide/driver, and he did a fantastic job. Monte Albán was fascinating and mysterious and beautiful, and Antonio was a wealth of knowledge about the site and the surrounding area. My tour was a little different than the itinerary listed on Viator due to COVID restrictions: in addition to the Monte Albán tour we visited an alebrije collective in Xoxocatlán that had fantastic pieces to look at or buy, we had lunch at a beautiful buffet-style restaurant that served delicious traditional Oaxacan fare, and we visited a workshop that specialized in barro negro, the famous Oaxacan black pottery. Very highly recommended!

Communication & expectation-setting needs improvement

Due to Covid, Monte Alban only allows 400 people per day. (The indoor on-site museum and 1 structure are totally closed.) Because of the limit, pickup starts at 7am. However, that doesn't mean the site opens that early; it still opens at 10am. We were not informed until en route that we'd be in line for 2-3 hours. If we had been told earlier, we could have brought books/games/breakfast to occupy us while sitting in the car waiting. My husband is bilingual and felt the Spanish commentary by the guide was much more informative than the English. I felt the English explanation of each site was significantly lacking. We also weren't told that due to the extra time in waiting this day tour would be closer to a 10-11 hour day, than the scheduled 8 hrs. Our sequence of stops was different than those listed and we felt we spent a lot of time driving, instead of the more efficient planned itinerary. Other disappointments: the food at the lunch stop was less-than-appealing (though not expensive 150MXP or ~$8 for buffet; drinks are extra). The Convent is closed entirely; we looked at the outside through the gate. I have a mobility challenge due to an injury and the driver made no effort to make the trip easier for me, often parking farther away (across a dirt/gravel lot) than other buses when there was plenty of space up front. Overall, I was disappointed, though my husband was satisfied with the day tour. We did enjoy the craft cooperatives, though.

My guide had 40 years experience at Monte Alban. He was very knowledgeable about it as well as he is a Zopoteca born in Oaxaca de Juarez. He did an excellent job. I could not have asked for anyone better. He was very kind, polite and courteous the whole time. I really enjoyed myself. I give my guide an A+++.

Moises was great! We really enjoyed the whole trip! I liked that we weren’t rushing through the spots and that he took he’s time explaining the history and solving any questions the group had.
