Emotionally Interesting

I went yesterday, June 7, 2021 with my 14 year old daughter and my 59 year old mother. We are of African American descent so doing this meant a lot to us. We live in Metairie, LA but have just never been to see the slave houses. And we could not get over how tiny they were. All of those people crammed in a shack with babies...wow. How unfairly they were treated really hurt. I felt so bad leaving to come home to peaceful Metairie. I felt like I was leaving ancestors behind. We enjoyed the beautiful magnolia trees and how great the ivy trees were. There were some pretty flowers out there, also. It was an educational experience for us all.

We went to Oak Alley and the included transportation is the best deal you get. The plantation was beautiful and they do have some of the original slave quarters that you can walk inside of and read about. The main house tour was nice and Richard was very knowledgeable about the property. The mint juleps were good too! As someone from the northern part of the country, it was a great opportunity to learn a bit more about our country’s history.

Great tour of this beautiful plantation grounds. The mint juleps were the best I ever tasted! We did the half day tour. Wish I had more time to spend exploring the slave quarters. Other than that it was a great experience.

This tour was an awesome look into our history and definitely invokes discussion regarding slavery in our country. Our tour guide for the Laura Plantation did a great job telling the story of the Creole family that owned that plantation and what is was like being a slave. The Laura Plantation had a lot of original artifacts still from the family that were on display and it helped me visualize what it was like to live on a plantation and also how the slaves lived as well. The Laura Plantation also has a small museum with more artifacts and information about the family and slaves that worked on the plantation. Everything about the tour was very thought provoking and shows us how much we still need to overcome in this country.
