After hotel pickup in New Orleans, you're driven to the Oak Alley Plantation, located among the Great River Road sugar plantations alongside the Mississippi River. On arrival, stroll under majestic, 300-year-old oak trees leading up to the antebellum Big House, and take a tour of the opulent mansion with a guide dressed in period costume. The Greek Revival architecture was built in 1837 and later restored in 1925.

Wander the 25-acre (10-hectare) grounds at your own pace during your free time. Visit the blacksmith shop, snap photos of antique farm equipment, or peruse exhibits on slavery and the Civil War. Grab lunch and beverages at the restaurant or cafe (own expense) before the tour moves to the swamp.

Next, board the bus and drive to the site of your swamp tour. On arrival, board a 16-passenger airboat with stadium-style seating for a high-speed adventure through the swamp. You'll have unobstructed views of wildlife, including an up-close look at the star attraction: alligators.

Your captain is experienced at searching out these reptiles, even during hibernation in colder months. The airboat, propelled by a large fan that blows air from the back of the vessel, can produce speeds of up to 35 mph (56 kph). You'll ride in just inches of water into parts of the swamp that are inaccessible to traditional boats or vehicles.

Great plantation and setting. Friendly and competent staff. Well explained although I would have like more in depth history about the life of slavery. Airboat tour very exciting, we saw many alligators.

Excellent tour! We had a great, funny tour guide who described the area and some of the history on the way to the plantation. The grounds and house at the Oaks plantation were beautiful and they did a good job keeping it historically accurate. We had two hours which was enough time to see everything but wish it would of been 30 minutes longer. The air boats were great!! It was fun and very educational. Our boat operator (not sure what you call them) was funny and knew everything about crocodiles and the bayou. Bring sunscreen and water though. We left when it was overcast but by the end of the tour it was full sun.

This made for a wonderful day in NOLA!!! First off, our bus driver was a dream ! Sweet, funny and safe! The transportation addition to this tour really added so much to the experience!! The plantation was amazing to see, although the tour guy inside the house was very hard to follow and understand. But, enough eye candy to make the visit totally worthwhile. Staff at the restaurant on site were delightful! The swamp boat tour was incredible!!! Cptn Dewey (sp?) was AWESOME!!!! So full of character and information, an absolute treat!!! He really made the event unforgettable!! Cannot recommend him and his pink, skateboarding gator shorts enough!!! :) Everyone in my group thought this was hands down a fabulous day and very affordable for all we got out of it!!! Thanks to all!!!!

Exciting and Educational

One of the best tours I have ever taken! Bus pick-up and drop off directly in front of our hotel. Swamp tour was exciting and educational. We even got to hold a baby alligator! Our guide was extremely knowledgeable about the bayou as he grew up there. He was not afraid to russel up some alligators for us to see. Oak Alley was breathtaking. The slave quarter area was highly educational and deeply sobering. We would do this tour again in a heartbeat!

Great excursion. The drive there is scenic and the plantation is beautiful. The two hours was plenty of time to see the grounds and get a quick bit from the café (not the restaurant).
