Stop At:
Abbaye du Mont-Saint-Michel
Take the opportunity to visit the Abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel, whose construction started during the 10th century and which represented one of the main Christian pilgrimage sites from the 8th century to the 18th century. Observe its diverse architectural influences from West Roman empire, Roman and Gothic styles. The Abbey is composed of typical clerical and military buildings including the Abbey church, the cloister, the refectory, the monks' ambulatory and the gardens known since the 12th century as the "Merveille" - Marvel. The monument became a symbol of French national identity after resisting the attack of the English army during the 14th and 15th century and was officially listed as a historic monument in 1874. Thanks to a continuous restoration work, the site could get back to its former glory. In summer, the Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey is best seen in all its splendor after sunset during the Night poetic route (not taking place Sundays)

skipping the line is not true. We had a queue of a half an hour. Just buy your ticket on the own website of Mon-Saint-Michel and choose your favorite visiting hour.

After we paid for the ticket we were informed that we would have to visit a different website to arrange viewing time. This was not made clear before we bought the tickets. The abbey itself was quiet and wonderful however the bottleneck at the entrance was terrifyingly crowded and felt very unsafe in in the current pandemic climate. Strongly suggest not taking the horse drawn carriage across the causeway it was packed full with no attempt at social distancing. It was also slower than walking. Would suggest taking a picnic and eating it inside the the gates of the abbey where there are many shady places to sit away from the crowds.
A dramatic place - plan to get there for tide coming in if possible

The site is very interesting if you like old castles. The parking costs 9 Euros and you need to pay for it at a kiosk near the visitor center BEFORE you return to the car co bring your parking ticket with you from the car. The bathrooms in the visitor center are free and without lines but the ones in the abby cost half a euro and have a line even on our low traffic day. The skip the line ticket was not helpful on our Oct 12 day because there was no line anywhere except the bathrooms at the abby. Lots of steps up. It really is important to get some kind of guide - rent audio or bring a Rick Steve's guide or something because there is negligible stuff written on plaques etc in the abbey and you won't appreciate anything just walking around. Not very interesting to kids I would not think. There are little food shops and lots of tourist stuff shops on the quaint road up to the abby. Seeing the tide come in or go out is said to be very interesting but we missed it. Try to look up times for and plan to be there for it if you can. It surely looks like it could be dramatic - we saw tide out state of things. This site is a 2.5 hour freeway drive from Le Havre with about 13 Euro road tolls each way.
Don't buy the pass if you're on a shuttle or bus trip. You won't have enough time to see everything.

There really was no line...but we did have no harm! The site is amazing and be prepared to climb and walk. Well worth seeing!
    Amazing place to visit.

We were able to go right in even though it was fairly crowded. This location is a must-see for anyone visiting the Normandy coast.
    Depends on timing?

We didn't really need or use it. We went to MSM on a Monday in Sept and arrived at the abbey after the parking and the shuttle bus at 10:30. We followed Rick Steves suggestion and went to the left of the main gate, under gendarme sign and up the stairs, no line, went right in and up the back way and no folks there at all. If we had run into lines it might have come in handy, not sure

Thankful that I had read reviews telling me to arrive first thing in the morning. Crowds were manageable and the weather was still coolish. It is a fascinating place with so much history. The only negative that was when we skipped the line, we also missed the area with the brochures and self guided tour information. Otherwise, we loved it. When we were leaving at noon, the crowds arriving were huge!!!
    Beautiful Mt St Michel
