Is it weird to go on a tour during a pandemic? Yes, but it's also very memorable!

I had a weekend layover in Mexico City. For my first-ever full day in Mexico City, I decided to book the English-language version of this tour. It's convenient because the itinerary is already planned, and also transportation is arranged. I had some confusion with the starting point and time, but eventually by ~9 am I got on the tour minivan. Traveling during a pandemic is a bit risky. Definitely keep your mask on in the tour minivan! Also, it wasn't possible to climb the pyramids at Teotihuacán and/or walk inside the Plaza de las Tres Culturas on the day that we went. However, it was still a wonderful day! No doubt the quality of the tour guide makes or breaks the experience. I used to be a (volunteer) tour guide, and thought that the guide (Karen) was amazing. It's not easy to remember tons of numbers, or to be able to tie ancient history to modern times. I appreciated learning about historical points that are also incredibly meaningful to current day. For example, the origins of the Day of the Dead holiday from burial practices in pre-Hispanic times, and the brutality of the government 10 days before the 1968 Olympics hosted by Mexico City. Anyways, interesting times. Lunch and chats with fellow tour passengers were great too!

Great tour if you want to see the pyramids and it’s one of the cheapest. Tour guide is not a fan of Catholics though so just a heads up on that commentary. Also we spent less than 30min at the Basílica , but 2+ hours at the pyramids.

Good Value but Standard

We were actually picked up by Tzompa tours so I'm not sure if all tours are outsourced to Tzompa or just us. Based on what I saw of other tour descriptions and the fact that every stop we made had dozens of other similar vans parked around, makes me believe that this a well oiled, mass-produced, tour. It's efficiently operated and takes the obligatory tourist stops at souvenir shops and designated restaurant which no doubt keeps the costs down. There's actually a couple more stops than listed in the tour title. You go to another excavated ruin within Mexico City and do an Agave/Tequila/Obsidian shop tour. We got a brief lecture about Teotihuacan before allowed 1-2 hours to explore it ourselves. Pros: 1) The tour operator was pretty responsive to emails and even called our hotel the day before. 2) Inexpensive and hits all the major spots. 3) Does hotel pickups in certain locations. Cons: 1) Not a comfortable ride since we were in a packed van. 2) Wish we could have spent 15 minutes exploring Basilica of Guadalupe on our own instead of loitering in a gift shop outside of it.
