This activity will end right where it started.
After pickup at your Mexico City hotel, head with your guide about two hours east of the city close to the base of the dormant Iztaccihuatl Volcano. You’ll be burning some calories ahead, so chow down on breakfast (own expense) before traveling through the Valley of Mexico, a highland plateau in the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, and the mountain pass of Paso de Cortés, before getting out at La Joya.

Start your hike up Iztaccihuatl Volcano, beginning at an elevation of 12,000 feet (3,700 meters). The volcano is also called ‘The Sleeping Woman’ or ‘White Woman’ for the four snow-covered peaks. While there are various trails ranging in difficulty, your guide will take up on an intermediate-level trail that both novices and those with more hiking experience will enjoy.

You may ascend as high as 13,800 to 15,800 feet (4,200-4,800 meters), depending on the members of your group, and reach tantalizingly near the snowcapped peaks and glaciers. After you catch your breath, admire views of the Valley of Mexico below, as well as the active volcano of Popocatepetl, aka ‘Smoking Mountain,’ located south of Iztaccihuatl.

Enjoy ample time at the summit to snap pictures and generally soak in the tranquility of the mountaintop. When you’re ready, make your descent and then board your transport to enjoy lunch (own expense) that may include options such as tamales, quesadillas, birria (spicy meat stew) or other tasty dishes. Arrive at your Mexico City hotel in the evening, with plenty of bragging rights to share.

Hiking and seeing the beautiful volcanoes
David_L
, Jul 2022
Hiking and seeing the beautiful volcanoes. Started the day with an hour long delay due to cops stopping our van 3 times for a huge "fine". Guide was supposed to be bilingual but luckily we have another traveler to translate for the group. Ride was very bumpy towards the start of the hiking trail. Our hike was shorter than expected. Other than that, it was great experience seeing Fumarole from Popo volcano.

What an adventure! After...

What an adventure! After a good ride out to Izta we finally hit the trail. Our guide Leonardo was great. He was patient with the slower hikers in the group and accommodating to the fast hikers as well. Everyone enjoyed the experience. The hike was not easy but the results and sense of accomplishment made everything awesome. Can't thank Leonardo enough. On average the hike is flat. Think about it!

The experience by itself was beautiful. The guide didnt care much about the group. He brought his girlfriend with him and slept the whole time during the transport. We couldnt go to the top he just let us go by ourself and he didnt wait for the slower ones. He wanted to go back earlier.

Hiking here is not for beginners. Need to have proper gear and experience.

Our guide Kevin was great and good at communicating what to do during the entire trip. Our ride started at 7 AM sharp from Hostel Amigo .Had a short 10 min break at the gas station after an hour into the trip to get some breakfast and pack some food .We reached the first checkpoint Paso de Cortes at around 8:30 AM. From there to the base of the hike it was dirt road with uneven ground and you need to wear seatbelt. We reached the base La Joya at 9:15 AM and started our hike at 9:30 ish. It took us a lot of effort to get to the 1st hike point and after some break to get some breather got to the final hike point at 11:30 AM .We started coming back down to Base and it took only an hour to hour 10 mins to get down but you have to be careful when getting down as you may fall on your back slipping on some loose gravel surfaces. Once we reach the base la joya we started our ride back to Mexico city and reached our final stops around 4 PM with heavy traffic along the way. I would definitely recommend this trip with Amigo Tours if you are an avid Hiker and you have the proper gear to do so .The price at $59 is worth for a whole day activity.

Terrible guide & experience
Shailey_K
, Feb 2022
First of all, there is no breakdown of itinerary and you literally are wondering all day what is next. The guide barely knows English and didn’t even introduce her name or herself when we started. We were lost all day on what to expect. Second, the level is difficult. Not easy or moderate by any means. There is a huge elevation to this hike and you could have a hard time breathing. I don’t think the guide provided enough details if you couldn’t make it to the top, how to come back, where & when to meet. Guides should be there for all levels, not be the first one to the top. We didn’t make it to the top and waited at the waiting point. No one showed up for 30 minutes we thought the guide left without us. We had to walk the whole thing back by ourselves hoping that our van was still there. It was not a good feeling. Also we walked an extra 8 miles RT because they were too cheap or lazy to get a reservation to park the car near the mountain. We were walking on the road as many cars continued to pass us by. Lastly, the entire time we’re told there will be no stops for food but at the end of the hike we stop at the shadiest spot for lunch with no restaurant name. Saw the guide get free food while the rest of us paid for questionable food.

Dear Amig@ Thank you for your comments, we deeply regret that this experience was not a 5-star experience for you. In our product we have put several warnings that this tour is not for beginners, while it deserves a medium effort, it is by no means simple, as you should understand climbing a bit of a mountain. The place where our unit is parked is the place indicated by the park, so we must abide by the rules. Finally, we take our clients to eat in a typical place of the place, supporting the local economy, for many years we have eaten in the places where we take our clients and it gives us the confidence that we have not had bad experiences, everything is very clean and with quality. We deeply regret that this experience was not to your liking. Dulce, Amigo Tours

Must try for hiking/outdoor lovers

Beautiful views, great hike and a really helpful and informative guide (Gerson). This is not an easy hike by any means just because of the altitude and the thin air. Having proper hiking shoes is important and so is dressing warm and in layers if you go in the winter. It can be pretty slippery on the way down as well. (We had snow). Also weather conditions play a role since the view from the very top of Izta ->(Popo Volcano) can be obstructed by clouds. But that's just weather. The only thing to keep in mind is that the ride is pretty long (4-5 hrs), no fault of the tour operator of course and also don't book this tour at the end of your trip because our initial booking was cancelled ( we were given a bs excuse) . Luckily we had time and the tour operators were pretty responsive and rescheduled it for us. Overall a must go if you like hiking and want to experience something completely different than the usual Mexican tourist experience.

Enjoyable hike, but transparency and safety could be improved.
Anita
, Aug 2021
The hike was nice. It was a bit intense, and you _do_ spend much more time in the van than hiking, but the views are quite amazing, and we even got to see the next volcano spout a little bit of smoke! There are, however, two things that could be improved. First, transparency would make the experience better. For example, it would be nice to have a clear schedule of the trip. When I asked for one at the beginning, the guide sighed and started repeating the stops. When I asked for specific times, I was only told we would be back to the city at around 4 PM. It would also be nice to provide more specifics on the length and inclination of the hike, since saying that it is necessary to be in good physical shape leaves a lot of room for interpretation. Another thing that bothered me was that the seat belts in the van were not in good shape. They were hidden below the seats, and I managed to fasten them once, but then I was not able to unfasten them. Since the van goes on the highway for a while, I think this is quite important from a safety point of view.

Climb a great historic volcano 🌋

The beautiful views from the volcano were breathtaking. Our guide, Gerson, was great. When I was having trouble climbing up the volcano, he lent me his pole to help me up. He also kept up with the pace of the group, which was great because this was my first time climbing up that high and we had to slowly adapt to the altitude. It was a great experience, we will do it again!

Amazing hike with great guides
Simona_R
, Jan 2020
We booked the hike for the vulcano few weeks in advance. We got our tickets and the basic informationvia email. I also emailed the company asking about the meeting point. They sent me a photo of the place and a detailed map from our hotel to find the place easier! That was a really nice touch and customer service. We went with 2 minivans (around 15 people all together) and made a stop on the way in a small supermarket to buy water and snacks. Thats also a nice touch for people, who dont know how and waht to prepare for the trek. We had amazing visibility conditions, the clouds stayed below us the whole time and we were enjoying the sunshine and a great view of Popocathepetl the whole time. The trek itself wasnt difficult, but we went from 3.990 m to 4.500m and it was really difficult to keep breathing in that altitude. The job of the guides was essencial here! One of them went in in the front and kept reminding us to breath slowly and deeply, also making little stops every 10 minutes to catch out breath and put the group together. The second guide was at the end of the group making sure everyone is okay. I thought I will reach the first base and rest as it was really challenging to continue, but the guides were very supportive and motivating and we went to try the second base too. I can highly advise to try the second base, its a different trek, very steep but you are progressing very slowly and carefully and its not a long way. The guide was staying with us all the time, motivating us and giving us enough time to enjoy the hike, and make pictures as well. On the way home we stopped in a small bufet with local food, where we could try some yummy specialities for a very reasonable price. It was one of the best experiences for me. The 2 guides were super friendly and played a very important role in making the experience wonderful. I would definitely recommend to do this trip, and especially with the Amigo tours, who provide great experienced guides. P.S. I recommend to bring treking poles, as they make the hike much easier.

I highly recommend this experience. This excursion made the trip for me and my friends to Mexico City. The hike can be challenging due to elevation but the scenery is totally worth it. also, the woman at the bottom of Iztaccihuatl makes the best quesadillas and coffee. My guide was Andres and he was AMAZING. He made sure everyone was doing okay on the hike. I would gladly do this tour again when I go back to Mexico City.
