Unacceptable, Unprofessional

Absolutely TERRIBLE! Booked months in advance to receive phone call, less than 24 hrs in advance, to inform our trip had been CANCELLED! An alternative trip to Blarney offered but we refused. Very disappointed, lack of foresight on Viator so we could plan a different trip. Excuse was about lack of bus transportation at Waterford. Unacceptable! We had other great experiences with Viator on our 3-week trip, but this was terrible. Bad way to end our trip.

Great Day Tour

My friend and I came to Dublin a few days' early prior to our scheduled tour. Based on recommendation from my son and others, I knew we wanted to visit Waterford Crystal. So we booked this all day rail trip to Kilkenny and Waterford. The train trip was beautiful, riding through the rural countryside. Toured a church in Kilkenny and walked around the town. Then on to Waterford. Total train time about 1 1/2 hours. Because of a mixup with the taxi vans, our lunch was rushed in order to meet our scheduled tour time at the Crystal factory. Because it was a Saturday, there were fewer people working in the factory than on a weekday. But they still had people demonstrating every phase of the process. Extremely interesting. They truly are artists. Had plenty of time to visit the showrooms and even the church across the street, famous for the wedding of Strongbow. It was a beautiful sunny day. The rail trip home took us on the "scenic route". Translate that into about a 3 hour ride. That's really my only negative comment. We didn't need that extra three hours. Didn't get back to Dublin until 8:30 pm. That made for a 13 hour day. Unnecessarily long I thought. But still, a really enjoyable day.

Waterford, Kilkenny

Thoroughly enjoyed the Waterford crystal tour. Our trip through Kilkenny on the Kilkennycitytours mini train was great with opportunity for pics. Kilkenny castle was beautiful grounds but wish there had been time to actually go through the Castle. Tour guide from IrishRailTours very informative. Based on the pace of the tour once off the train, I would not recommend for people that have to walk slowly or with a cane as it was difficult for one member of the tour, and the return to the rail train would have been nice if we could have returned via the Kilkennycity train does that took us into town, instead of having to split the group into multiple taxis to get back.

We had a wonderful time on the train with Ian and a special treat was that Joe was riding with him so we got two great guides for the price of one. They are both lovely gentlemen! They shared their knowledge and tips with us all day. The tour is designed to spend just enough time at each place. It was raining when we got back to Dublin but Ian didn’t leave until we were all safely in a taxi on our way to our hotels. It could not have been more pleasant.

We had a great tour to Waterford, mainly due to our wonderful guide Paddy! Everything that we expected we got, and then some. Would do it again anytime.

Nice train ride and fun adventure

I was pleasantly surprised when we found out there were only six of us on the tour. John was our guide and he did a great job of explaining what would be happening as we went along. We felt safe and looked after. He went above and beyond the expected. All of us in our little group had become friends by the end of the tour.

Paddy was our guide and we didn't stop laughing from start to finish. He was very professional and made the whole trip a pleasure. Very knowledgeable and informative. We were made to feel very welcome and looked forward to more of the same with our other booked trip by Viator.

Waterford by Rail

Our tour guide, Paddy, made this already great tour delightful. This was our only rail tour but would do it again vs travel by bus on small, windy roads (though that was fun too). There is more to Waterford than glass and Paddy took us on the Viking history walk. We had plenty of time for lunch and the factory tour of Waterford crystal. Recommend this tour, especially if you enjoy a train ride.

The countryside of Ireland is so beautiful to see and the whole tour is well done. John was amazing and made sure the entire group had fun together. Seeing how crystal is made and the detailing was so awesome.

Our tour with Liam was one of the best tours we have ever been on. Not only was he incredibly well informed, he was very considerate of my husband who is somewhat disabled. Liam made sure there was a wheelchair for him so my husband could your the Waterford factory. We had a group of 6 who were strangers. Less than an hour into the tour, we were all chatting . This was because of Liam's knowledge and personality, I am sure.

Outstanding tour. Our tour guide Paddy was excellent. On the train ride he took time to sit with each group of tour participants and talked with us about what we were going to see, he also explained Ireland history and answered any questions we had. Very knowledgeable and pleasant tour guide. He recommended several pubs and restaurants to visit at each stop, including in Dublin.

Fun Day but too slow

I enjoyed this day trip and it was a great way to see Kilkenny - a beautiful old city and the Waterford factory in one day. However, the trip was a little different than advertised. I expected we would be taken to each city then left to explore on our own. This was not the case. Our tour guide, Paddy, had planned out almost every minute. Some of the tour was great, some not so much. In Kilkenny for example, we had a driving tour that was kind of dull, and our tour guide insisted we go inside a random Catholic church with little historical significance. I would have preferred to have more time to explore on my own. Also in Waterford, he insisted we all eat at the same restaurant, which was not very good. Again, I would have rather had time to have lunch on my own. Also, the trip took a bit longer than expected and we did not get back to Dublin until 8, which made for a very long day. The Waterford factory was a really great experience and I would highly recommend. However in general, you could take the train yourself from Dublin to these places and have the flexibility to explore on your own, which I would recommend over this tour.

Awesome day!

The train ride was just beautiful through the rolling hills and farms . There were vibrant green fields of every shade. There were sheep, cows, horses and castles. The Kilkenny stop was magical. A smaller city than Dublin, had all the charm of what we anticipated an Ireland town. Waterford was also beautiful. The Waterford factory itself was a great experience. Our tour Guide, Paddy, was informative about all aspects of the tour and would point out historical items even on the train. After Waterford the train took a different route back to Dublin though the smaller towns . The train tour was well worth the money. Please be aware that there is still quite a bit of walking.

Took wrong train

This was the first tour we took with Rail Tours. Unfortunately we did not know that other tours were leaving from the same location in Dublin at approximately the same time. So, when the announcement was made to follow the yellow jackets and get on the train, we did. Our ticket was stamped and we boarded it. We waited about 10mins until the train started to move. It was at that time that a Rail Tours person checked our tickets and informed us we were on the train to Cork and not Waterford. We know it was our fault for not checking with them as we boarded the train, but it was our first tour. They should always check everyone's ticket before they board the trains. They should also tell everyone when you check in that other tours are there as well. On the positive side, David from Rail Tours was extremely helpful and made sure we had an enjoyable day to Cork, the Blarney Castle, and Cobh. The tour we took was very good. And he was wonderful.

Waterford Crystal and Kilkenny is Good Day Trip
Glendal_W
, Oct 2018
This is a good day trip from Dublin to view some scenic countryside and visit too historic cities in Ireland. There is early departure from Dublin Hueston station but a comfortable train ride to Kilkenny. The main attraction here is the Kilkenny Castle which has interesting history and largely restored. Across the street is the Fashion Design center that is worth a visit and has a nice pastry and food service restaurant. A good place to take a rest before going back to the train station to catch the train to waterford. This is scenic trip as well and Waterford is very interesting in the history of Ireland. The main attraction is the Waterford Crystal factory where you see the making of crystal from the moulding of the crystal design, to the blowing of the crystal into mould, and on to the cutting of the crystal into beautiful pieces. After this there is rather long train ride back to Dublin, but you will see some beautiful countryside and enjoy a relaxing ride on the train. A day trip worth taking if you visit Ireland.
