Seeing the magnificent Stags
Adrian_W
, Aug 2020
We had originally booked for a Tuesday night, but the weather forecast for that evening predicted thunder storms so our walk was postponed until a mutually agreed Friday evening. We arrived in Pooley Bridge, having followed a long diversion (the bridge is being replaced), early and were able to have a lovely meal in the Crown Inn. We met up with John as planned and discovered that it was only our party of three of us with him. We set off in our cars and headed to Martindale stopping on the way to admire the views and the old Martindale church with one of the oldest Yew Trees in the country. We eventually parked up and were soon walking along a very good path about half way up the valley side. It wasn't long before we spotted our first Red Deer, then the more we looked the more of them we saw, in fact almost wherever we looked in the valley below us we could see deer, then in the bracken above us we spotted half a dozen magnificent Stags all with wonderful sets of antlers. We stayed in the valley for nearly two and a half hours seeing probably about 250 deer in all, before heading back to our cars to bid farewell to john, who had been a wonderful and very informative guide who obviously has a passion for nature and the area. It should be noted that binoculars and stout shoes are needed.

This was excellent. The walk was easy. Lots off deer to see. John was very knowledgeable on the area and and told us a lot off things about the history of the mountains. We all enjoyed it very much. I would highly recommend

Excellent. Informative guide who was also very observant. Even lent out binoculars for better view. Saw around 200 deer including a number of stags and youngsters.
