This was quite possibly the best guided tour that my fiancé and I have had the pleasure to partake in. Charles took us on a four hour journey along the normandy beaches and delivered a grand lesson in the events that took place during World War Two. An unforgettable experience indeed. A brilliant afternoon with an expert guide who really knew his stuff. He was on time, even a little early. Took us to Longues-sur-Mer for an introductory talk to set the scene and to prepare us for what was to come. The Omaha Beach experience will live long in the memory and filled us with awe at the courage and tenacity of the troops involved and the sacrifices made. We arrived at the American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer just in time for the 4pm daily lowering of the Stars and Stripes to the sound of a military lament. The wall to the missing was explained and the impressive memorial shown to us. The sight of the many white crosses marking the graves of the fallen brought a poignant reminder of 'Saving Private Ryan'. Then we were taken to Pointe du Hoc and told about the scaling of the sheer cliff by US Rangers - given orders to complete their climb in half an hour; truly awesome. Our amazing guide deserves the plaudits he will undoubtedly receive from visitors following in our footsteps.
