Dún Aonghasa (Dun Aengus)
Even if you’re not staying on the Aran Islands, a time-saving way to visit the fort, and other attractions on the island of Inishmore, is on a day trip from Dublin. Tours typically include transfers to Galway by train, followed by a short and scenic flight to the Aran Islands. You’ll have plenty of time to explore the site, and enjoy some of Ireland’s best panoramas, before returning to Dublin in the evening.
Things to Know Before You Go
Dún Aonghasa is a must-visit for those with an interest in ancient Irish history.
There is an admission fee.
The 1-mile (1.6-kilometer) walking path from the visitors’ center is rocky so good walking shoes are a must.
The site’s multiple ancient stone walls, stairwells, and chambers make it inaccessible for wheelchair users and strollers.
There is no fence or barrier at the cliffside, so take care.
The site may be closed in the event of poor weather.
How to Get There
Dún Aonghasa is located 4.5 miles (7 kilometers) from the Kilronan Inishmore harbor. Private tourist buses transport visitors from the harbor to the site’s visitor center, or you can rent a bicycle from the harbor and cycle there, which takes around 25 minutes. From the visitor center, there is a short but uneven walk to the site.
When to Get There
The site is open to visitors year-round, seven days a week. From November through March, it is open from 9.30am to 4pm and from April through October it is open from 9.30am to 6pm. As this is the most popular of the Aran Islands’ prehistoric forts, try to arrive early in the morning to avoid the crowds.
Other Prehistoric Sites
If you are interested in exploring more of the Aran Islands’ prehistoric forts, you can visit Dún Duchathair, a large stone fort perched on the cliffs of Killeany; Dún Eoghanachta; and Dún Eochla—all of which are located on Inishmore. On nearby Inishmaan, you’ll find Dún Chonchuir, an oval-shaped stone fort.
