The Basics

Set on the edge of the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve on the Yucatan Peninsula, Muyil is a worthwhile detour with a number of significant ruins to explore, as well as an observation tower that offers views overlooking the neighboring lagoon. The ancient settlement is estimated to date back to as early as 300 BC. Remaining structures include the Sacbé, a 15-foot-wide (5-meter-wide) ancient road, and the Pink Palace, known for its well-preserved stuccos. Tours from Tulum and Cancun combine stops at Sian Ka'an and Muyil.

Private Sian Kaan Muyil Lazy River Tour
We had a great private tour with Salvador! He is very knowledgeable, friendly and laid back. We booked rather late but it was no problem! Easy communication with no issues. Salvador took lots of pictures (which was shared with us online) and we had some very tasty mini bananas and mangos that was provided during our excursion. The Muyil ruins were very interesting and the river float was amazing! There were almost no people around either which made it even nicer. Would definitely recommend this tour and company. Thanks Salvador!

Nico was great, informative, and guided us throughout the tour in Muyil ruins and Sian Ka'an lagoon. But the best part of the tour was the included vegetarian burrito and brownie.

Bacalar Muyil
We booked this tour by viator because all te excursion of Tui were too expensive. This tour was great, we got picked up by our hotel, right on time. It was a long drive from Playa del Carmen but it was totally worth it. The temples in Muyil were really beautiful and it was great that there were no other people exxept for our group. Once arrived in Bacalar, we had a short time to see the fort from the outside, but we couldn't go in there. Afterwards we went to the lagoon. Sadly it was a rainy day, but the lagoon was still very pretty. The tour overview is exactly what you will do and see. Just the cenotes are open spots in the lagoon, not like the caves. The lunch, in a traditional Mexican restaurant, was the best food we had during our time in Mexico. Paulina is the nicest guide we have ever had. She told a lot about everything and was very kind. . Nice to go in a small group. Really recommand this tour.

Sian Ka'an and Muyil Archaeological Site Tour
I have traveled the world and and I usually avoid Tours. Sometimes you have to take them to see the best things. I have to say this is one of the best tours of my over 35 years of traveling. Santi knowledge and kind manner is amazing. Plus booking this tour you are supporting local environmentally safe practices and people. I recommend the tour above all others. The price is worth it and all levels! You will love getting in the water it’s magical dash the whole area is magical!

Great combination of archaeology, cultural explanation, and nature experience. Luigi was a wonderful guide for our family. He had substantial knowledge and was attentive to members of our group that needed a little extra help. Well done and a very enjoyable excursion.

Best Memories for a Trip

Sian Ka'an and Muyil Archaeological Site Tour
One of the best things I hae ever done for myself traveing was to take "this" tour! I did not want the day to end!!!! Santi was our guide ....gave me the one of the best memories for a day :) I consider myself well traveled and I usually avoid tours and do pretty good. But, on a shorter stay in Tulum I needed to get around and see things along with getting history. I also like supporting eco-friendly groups. These people are amazing-fun, well versed in the surroundings and history. Also the small groups made me feel as if I was with friends not on a tour. I ended up doing 2 tours with them and wish I had more time I would have done a 3rd. I surprised myself for a non tour person:)

Things to Know Before You Go

  • A raised boardwalk trail (accessible for a small fee) leads to Sian Ka'an and to the observation tower that overlooks the lagoon.

  • Bathrooms are available at the entrance to the site.

  • It’s a steep ascent up the observation tower.

  • Be sure to bring insect repellent, especially during rainy season.

How to Get There

Muyil is located by the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, around 12 miles (20 kilometers) south of Tulum. If you’re driving, take Highway 307; a sign marks the entrance. You can also grab a bus (or colectivo) from Tulum to Felipe Carrillo, a town located on the edge of the reserve. Wait time for a bus is typically 15 minutes.

When to Get There

The best time to experience the Muyil ruins is during the region’s dry season (from December to April), when there are fewer mosquitos and less humidity. But this is also when you’ll run into the biggest crowds; January to March is the busiest time for tourism. If you’re traveling on your own, try to arrive early in the morning to avoid the bus tours.

The Chacchoben Ruins

Located about 110 miles (177 kilometers) south of Tulum and a 1.5-hour drive from Muyil, the Chacchoben ruins are the largest and most visited Maya archaeological site in Costa Maya. The mostly unexcavated site is a popular day-trip option from Cancun and surrounding cities, as well as for cruise ship passengers from the Costa Maya port.
