The Best Cities Around the World to Celebrate Pride
Pride is more than just rainbows and parades.
Taipei’s Jianguo Holiday Flower and Jade Market is a massive and popular market open only on weekends and public holidays. Stretching for nearly 0.62 miles (1 kilometer), hundreds of vendors and stalls offer an incredible array of plants and flowers at the flower market, and jade and other gemstones at the jade market.
The two markets are located in a repurposed parking lot under the Jianguo overpass. The flower market stretches between Ren’ai and Xinyi roads, and the jade market between Ren’ai and Jinan roads. The flower market features more than 200 stalls selling myriad plants and flowers, the most popular being orchids, bonsais, and succulents. The jade market’s more than 300 vendors sell jewelry and other items made of jade and various gemstones plus charms and loose beads. You can easily spend a few hours browsing among the extensive offerings at both markets—a great venue for finding souvenirs to take home.
The Jianguo Holiday Flower and Jade Market is a must-visit for flower lovers and those interested in jade and jewelry.
Bring cash, as most vendors do not accept anything else.
Be sure to bargain for the best prices, particularly in the jade market.
The markets are largely wheelchair accessible, though some stalls may not have sufficient space to maneuver.
The market is located under the Jianguo overpass, at the intersection of Xinyi and Ren’ai roads. By MRT, take the Red Line to Da’an Station (Exit 6) and walk a few minutes toward the overpass. A number of buses also stop at the Xinyi-Jianguo intersection.
The market is open only on weekends and public holidays. Peak hours are from noon onwards, so visit when the market first opens to beat the crowds.
South of the flower and jade markets is the Jianguo Artist Market. Smaller than the other two markets, it features a variety of handicrafts, such as paper lamps, paintings, calligraphies, hand-blown glass ornaments, and hand-carved furniture. Food carts and street performers add to the festive atmosphere.
