The historical city of Rochester, located east of London, was a special place for well known author Charles Dickens as this was his childhood home and the place where he lived later in life. Many buildings and other locations in Rochester were featured in Dickens' writings, more than any other city besides London. Some of the buildings that still exist today include the Restoration House, which was used as the home of Estella and Miss Havisham inGreat Expectations, and the Poor Travellers House, which was featured in a short Christmas story.

Visitors can also go to the Guildhall Museum of local history where you can learn more about Charles Dickens and his works. There is also a walking tour through the city that guides you to the buildings and locations he wrote about. Other highlights in Rochester include the Rochester Cathedral which was founded in 604 and is the second oldest cathedral in England. Visitors can also explore Rochester Castle and the views from the top of one of the tallest keeps in the country.

Private Day Tour to Rochester Castle and the Town of Charles Dickens from London

Private Day Tour to Rochester Castle and the Town of Charles Dickens from London

Rochester, originally a Roman settlement, boasts a 12th-century castle with a stone tower known as a keep. Although much of it is now in ruin, it still one of the best-preserved, and tallest, medieval structures in England or even France. Standing on the banks of the River Medway, Kent, it has played a strategic role in England’s defence for centuries, having experienced various sieges. Even the Normans built an original structure during the 11th century. Rochester is a unique destination. A famous local was Charles Dickens. Rochester inspired his literary works and, today, visitors can follow in his footsteps and marvel at the area’s medieval architecture, its historic cathedral, and with a Dickensian twist! Here’s your opportunity to add something different to your visit to England so many still miss. This tour can be delivered as a day tour on its own, (as listed); or please enquire if you wish to add to an overall day trip with another destination in Kent.
