The Basics

Shanghai Tower tours typically focus on the observation deck, which can be very popular; it’s well worth securing tickets in advance. Particularly at night, the panoramic views across Shanghai’s surrealist skyline are epic, making the Shanghai Tower observation deck a popular stop on private and custom Shanghai tours.

As there is only so long one can spend looking at the view, any Shanghai Tower observation deck visit is typically just one component of a more comprehensive exploration of the city. Tours that pair a historic water town with the hyper-modern tower offer a lovely sense of the region’s dualities.

Wonderful day in Shanghai!!!
We were so pleased with our private day tour in Shanghai! Xin, our guide, was absolutely wonderful. We so enjoyed the beautiful Zhujiajiao Water Town, The Sky Tower, and all of the other amazing sights!! Xin showed us around to wonderful shopping areas too! We really appreciated her thorough and comprehensive explanations of our questions and the wonderful lunch at a fantastic local restaurant. When we return to Shanghai, we look forward to seeing Xin again!!

Private Full-Day Tour: Shanghai Old and New Highlights
Rita was our tour guide and she was excellent. She was so knowledgable and catered the tour to us. We loved having our own car and they were so accommodating. We only had one day in the city but we felt like we saw everything and we learned so so much. I learned more in the hours spent with Rita than I had in all my research. Highly Highly recommend.

Private Full-Day Tour: Shanghai Old and New Highlights
We had one day in shanghai to see the sites and spent it with Lily. She customized it to fit what we were interested in seeing and the weather (which wasn't great). This was a no rush tour - we had time to really enjoy the museum, gardens and the marketplaces. Overall, very nice day and would recommend to everyone.

Private Full-Day Tour: Shanghai Old and New Highlights
Our Guide, the lovely Freya, picked us up at our Hotel on time. She took us all over Shanghai to see the main sights. She willingly answered all our questions, although, I would have liked her to be more proactive and provide information on her own. Regardless, we tremendously enjoyed the day, and the delicious dumplings lunch. Thank You Freya and Sunny Tours!

4-Hour Shanghai Private Flexible Highlight Tour with Lunch or Dinner Option
My family of five adults enjoyed the flexibility of the private half day tour where Sunny allowed us to make our own itinerary- this was the highlight of our time in Shanghai. We got great photos and saw the our top priorities; The Bund, French Concession, etc. Sunny’s van driver got us to multiple sites rapidly and with ease. We wrapped up with the lights over the river. Highly recommended

Zhujiajiao Water Town and Shanghai City Private Day Tour
The name of my tour guide was Judy. Judy did a great job of showing me around. The schedule was very well planned and we progressed through all the points of interest in a timely manner. The overall plan was a great introduction to the sights and history of Shanghai. Judy was very knowledgeable of the local history and the backgrounds of all the places that we attended. August is a busy season in Shanghai. Be prepared for crowds and warm weather. Overall a great experience!

Private Full-Day Tour: Shanghai Old and New Highlights
Collecting us right on time Lily structured the day quickly to ensure we saw everything we wanted to but to avoid being held-up in the holiday traffic. The driver was amazingly good at being just a few minutes away whenever we were ready to move on. We learnt a lot about Shanghai & the Chinese way of life in the day we spent with Lily. As this was our first time in China this was a brilliant way to experience such a wonderful city & country. Thank you Sunny & Lily!!

Private Full-Day Tour: Incredible Shanghai Highlights
Fantastic day with Celine. She picked us up at the hotel and we visited the Bund, visited a garden that parents try to find a march for their child, went to Yu Garden, Confucius Temple, a silk factory, and a tea house fo a tea ceremony. We also ate at a local dumpling restaurant and walked around the very upscale French Concession. At the end of our tour, Celine instructed the driver to drive us around pointing out other architecture of the city on the way to the airport. Celine helped us get checked in and made sure everything was handled before she left us. We had so much fun and she was very personable. The driver was nice too. I would recommend this tour to anyone visiting Shanghai! Thanks Celine!

4-Hour Shanghai Private Flexible Highlight Tour with Lunch or Dinner Option
Sunny was my main point of contact when I booked the tour. She immediately contacted me and made me feel very reassured about the tour as she was able to answer all my questions and followed up with me from booking to tour date. Even when my Visa was rejected the first time, Sunny reassured me I could try again (I would try to set aside minimum 2 hours between landing and tour start time to account for the possible visa issues, if layover is less than 24 hours). I took the Maglev to meet my guide Feifei who was absolutely wonderful, very knowledgeable about Shanghai in every aspect. Despite the cold, dreary day, Feifei took me to all the tourist attractions and was very time efficient, so was the driver. Cannot say enough good things about them. They also made sure I made it back to my flight with plenty of time to spare. I recommend spending the money (although it's a way better deal with more than one person) for peace of mind in a new country.

Private Full-Day Tour: Shanghai Old and New Highlights
Feifei was our guide and made our tour of Shanghai a great success. She was very flexible and allowed us to spend more time on the things we wanted to see and added other attractions as time allowed. It was great having the car available all day to pick us up and carry us to the next stop in a seamless fashion. Well worth the money!

How to Get There

A landmark that’s visible for miles around, the Shanghai Tower is hard to miss. To get there on public transit, take metro Line 2 to Lujiazui station and walk 15 minutes. You might also choose to cross the river from the Bund by ferry, or simply join a tour that provides transport to the Shanghai Tower and other key sights.

When to Get There

From the bubble-gum pink spaceship of the Oriental Pearl Tower to the glistening lights of river cruises, Shanghai’s skyline comes into its own at night. While the observation deck doesn’t stay open as late as some American tower viewing decks, going after sunset is hugely rewarding. Needless to say, look for a clear day for maximum viewing potential.

The Race to the Top

Construction on the Shanghai Tower began in 2008. After several false starts, it finally opened to the public in 2017. Designed by American architectural firm Gensler, the tower makes a 120-degree rotation to help minimize wind loads. When it opened, it became the world’s second tallest tower after Dubai’s Burj Khalifa and the highest building in China. A project underway in Shenzhen may take its crown in the next decade.
