Cayo Levantado (Bacardi Island)

Samana, Dominican Republic

The basics

You can kayak, snorkel, rent pedal boats, or explore the hilly tropical forest via a series of trails that cut through the jungle. Day trips to Bacardi Island, which typically depart from Punta Cana, tend to include round-trip transport and lunch on the beach, and often also include a visit to Los Haitises National Park, whale watching off the coast of Samaná, or a stop at El Limón Waterfall.

Full Day Samana Whales from Punta Cana with Waterfall, Bacardi Island & Lunch
The tour guide, Nathan was informational and knowledgeable. It was a long day but worth it. Make sure to tip everyone, especially horseback ride. The employees work incredibly hard in difficult and extreme terrain.

Full Day Samana Whales from Punta Cana with Waterfall, Bacardi Island & Lunch
Be prepared for a LONG day - 12-14 hours. Saw numerous whales, water is was a little choppy so if you're prone to sea sickness, take your dramamine in the morning. The waterfall is amazing, be prepared to get wet and muddy. Bring tip money for the boat crew and the workers/guides who help with the horseback ride and waterfall hike.

Samana day trip from Punta cana: Cayo Levantado & El limon Waterfall
Oh my goodness! Where do I start. This was one of my favorite excursions! The ride to the location was very long but worth it once we arrived to our destination. The horseback ride to the waterfall and experiencing the waterfall was the best part! Samana Island was very beautiful and I would have liked to tour more of the Island. I am glad I was able to experience this excursion as a travel agent and along with my friends to see what excursions to recommend moving forward.

Very interesting, but not the promised group size of 15 people

Samana: Cayo levantado ( Bacardi Island) & El Limon Waterfalls from Punta Cana
Very Interesting Tour with good guides. Nevertheless we booked a tour maximum about 15 people. At the End there were at least 50 resulting in a considerable loss of time during drop off at all the hotels

Full Day Samana Whales from Punta Cana with Waterfall, Bacardi Island & Lunch
The experience was amazing and probably a once in a life time to see the Whales. No stop was rushed. Lunch was nice. CAUTIONS/ Advice: This trip from start to finish from our Punta Cana hotel was 15 hours! Breakfast/Snack was coffee (perhaps there was more stuff before we arrived but we weren’t the last. Your pick-up van is not your coach for the day. You go to a coach point and are split into groups for the day. This excursion is for the masses and you will be crammed into boats, safari trucks and coaches. Toilets - take loo roll, toilet tissues, wipes/ sanitiser. Think festival toilets with 10,000 people going in the one place before you. Take extra water and snacks for the long day, don’t forget suncream. I would not take my children on this trip it was too long and too much and they range between 9-15 The guides at the horses are unpaid. Whatever they are ‘tipped’ is what they earn for the day. Long socks for the horse riding - boots can be borrowed for Free but they only go up to size UK 10. Sick bags/ motion sickness tablets. Most people felt ill on the boat.

Los Haitises National Park, Montaña Redonda & Bacardi Island
Wonderful trip, excellent service too. Traveling by bus from Puerto Plata takes about 2.5 hours. They take great care of you during the cruise. As a bonus you will get sparkling wine and even lobster. Compared to other agencies, the price is good.

How to get there

The island is three miles (five kilometers) from Samaná Bay and accessible by boat from the Samaná pier on Avenida Marina. You can hire a private boat or opt for a day trip with hassle-free hotel pickup and drop-off. The public beach occupies the western part of the island.

When to get there

The best season to visit the island is between March and May, when crowds are scarcer and there’s less chance of rain ruining your beach day. Plan to visit later in the afternoon, when day-trippers head back to Punta Cana. Take a look at the cruise ship schedule, as the beach can get crowded when a ship is in port.
