The Basics

There are many ways to explore the park, though a majority of visitors do so by driving a 34-mile (55-kilometer) scenic loop through the popular Island in the Sky district. The Needles district attracts hikers, while the Maze rewards those who make the effort to get there with remote slot canyons and stunning rock formations. The Green and Colorado rivers set the scene for relaxing rafting trips.

If you are pressed for time, you can see the park’s highlights in a day—or even as little as half a day—on a tour from Moab. A more leisurely schedule enables you to see the park as part of a multi-day tour from Las Vegas or Salt Lake City through a star-studded lineup of Arizona and Utah parks: Zion, Bryce Canyon, Monument Valley, Capitol Reef, Arches, and the Grand Canyon.

Rick was awesome!
We traveled through Canyonlands National Park on a half day tour with another couple. We all thoroughly enjoyed Rick’s company. He was really personable and fun. He also gave us some great tips for the rest of our trip.

Canyonlands National Park Self-Driving Tour
I liked the way the app followed your progress, and would start the narration as you approached your destination. The only downside was the beginning. It should be renamed the dinosaur park, instead of the Moab Giants. They are the smallest things in the area.

Scenic Tour of Canyonlands National Park & Dead Horse Pt
The guide, Ania, was prompt, very personable and extremely knowledgeable. She went the extra mile to help me locate my phone, which we left on a bench outside the hotel in our excitement to leave. She took amazing pictures for me because she saw my disappointment regarding not having my phone to take pics. Highly recommend.

Spectacular vistas. Ben, our guide, taught us a lot of new things regarding geology. Felt very safe in vehicle. Learning about the cow paths was great.

Canyonlands National Park Half-Day Tour from Moab
Our guide (young) Larry was excellent - very knowledgeable and caring. Everything was handled perfectly except we did not realize we would be picked up at our hotel. The trip was beyond words - exciting and very special. Scenery was out of this world. The only drawbacks were how bumpy the ride was but that was part of the fun.

Canyonlands National Park Half-Day Tour from Moab
This was a fabulous 1/2 day tour through some rough, scenic route! The views were amazing. The tour took us to some high viewpoints where we could really get a sense of the lay of the land. The guide, Chris, provided a lot of flora information, rock formation information and general fun facts about movies that have been filmed in the area. We enjoyed it immensely.

Canyonlands National Park Half-Day Tour from Moab
Rick was our guide and he was excellent. He took us on a tour of Canyonlands and we used a back entrance to skip the long line. He was very patient with our young daughters and had snacks for them and had good stories to keep them entertained. We had great views of the park!

An experience I wouldn’t want to miss

Canyonlands National Park Half-Day Tour from Moab
I would have missed so much of the quiet solitude and great landscape if I didn’t go on this trip. Aldon took us on back roads that I could have never taken without the tour. The Easter weekend was super busy elsewhere and we got away from the crowds!!! So worthwhile.

Horseshoe Canyon

Situated in its own area of the park, Horseshoe Canyon was added to Canyonlands National Park in 1971. It’s best known for the Great Gallery, a panel of life-sized carvings considered among the most important collections of rock art in North America. The rewarding hike to the Great Gallery covers 7 miles (11 kilometers) roundtrip and takes at least five hours to complete.
