With its 19 miles (30 kilometers) of sandy coastline and tropical climate, Mazatlan is an ideal destination for beach lovers but the region also offers a range of outdoor activities for thrill seekers, wildlife watchers, and families. Here are your options for getting the most out of Mazatlan’s natural landscape.
Ziplining
The coastline is by no means the only natural attraction in the region. Mazatlan’s often-overlooked rural surroundings feature dense tropical forest, perhaps best admired from a tree-top perspective. Enjoy a break from the busy streets and experience an adrenaline rush as you soar through jungle canopy on a zipline, absorbing memorable views of the villages and vegetation below.
Sea and River Excursions
Set on the Pacific coast, not far from the Presidio River, Mazatlan offers plenty of possibilities to explore by water. Discover sunset views on a dusk cruise, escape the crowds on board a private vessel, or gain insight into the region’s main industry on a fishing trip. Wildlife enthusiasts can snorkel, whale watch, or swim with dolphins, while adrenaline seekers can explore by kayak or speedboat.
ATV Tours
Cruise across Sinaloa’s rugged landscape and discover hidden gems on a journey off the beaten track. ATV tours from Mazatlan typically explore the Sierra Madre Mountains and Presidio River, allowing visitors to access unfrequented spots, while also enjoying the adrenaline rush of quad bike riding.
Hiking and Biking
Extreme sports aren’t the only adventures offered in the region. Known for its many protected parks, hiking or cycling excursions provide a tranquil way to experience Mazatlan’s wildlife, allowing visitors a firsthand look at the region’s endemic species. Cycle your way around nearby Stone Island (Isla de la Piedra), or ascend the Sierra Madre Mountains with a private guide, gaining intimate insight into the area’s unique ecosystem.

Deer Island
18
The three islands of Mazatlán are considered one of the most iconic symbols of the region. They are at once an interesting ecological study and a fantastic recreational space, thanks to their natural attributes and terrain. The islands were named according to the main species that inhabit or once inhabited them: Birds, Deer and Wolves.
The largest and most popular island is Isla de Venados (Deer Island), located right in the middle of the three. It has the most extensive beach and is the best place in Mazatlan to practice snorkeling, thanks to small waves and crystal clear waters. Isla de Venados is ideal for swimming, jet skiing, banana boating, paddle surfing and also for hiking and exploring on land. With an impressive view of the coast of Mazatlan and the surrounding area, you’ll fall in love with the natural beauty and unique perspective that Isla de Venados offers. Don’t miss it!
