Pak Ou Caves

Near Pak Ou the Tham Ting,Near the Village of Ban Pak Ou - Mekong River, Luang Prabang, Laos

The Basics

There’s a reasonable fee to enter the Pak Ou Caves. While there are cheaper ways to reach the caves, the Mekong River cruise from Luang Prabang is a big part of the attraction of visiting, and that’s how most guests arrive.

Pak Ou Caves tours typically lead with this Mekong River cruise, and some stop at artisan villages, including the whiskey village Ban Xang Hai. A few tours combine the Pak Ou Caves with an Ou River (Nam Ou) cruise, while others pair it with beautiful Kuang Si Falls, on the other side of Luang Prabang. Most Pak Ou Caves tours depart from Luang Prabang, but the destination also features on some multi-day Laos tours.

Amazing experience! The guide - Mr Thin - spoke excellent English and gave us helpful insights. I was also lucky that the tour group was also a lovely group of people. A wonderful way to spend the day!

1 DAY Mekong Cruise to Pak Ou Caves. Kuang Si Waterfalls . Local Villages
This was an excellent day trip. It was a very good combination of a relaxing river cruise, sightseeing, beautiful waterfalls (with very few people there at the end of the day). The lunch was amazing and our tour guide was absolutely fantastic. I would highly recommend this tour.

River cruise was great, caves and waterfalls are awesome, and lunch at the elephant camp was lovely. Mr. Thin is a great guide as well. Could have done without the stops at the two villages... tourist traps

This was one of the best tours I’ve ever been on! ( and I have been on dozens) Our guide, Deng was knowledgeable, friendly, spoke English well, and was professional. Our driver was very safe and profesional too. Every part of the tour was wonderful and we got to experience the cultural things of Laos that are not often seen. The lunch was fantastic! The highlight was the waterfalls; simply one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the world.I highly recommend Manifa Tours and Deng!

A Full Day Tour That Gives You Value For Your Money

1 DAY Mekong Cruise to Pak Ou Caves. Kuang Si Waterfalls . Local Villages
This was a very good tour. The boat trip down the Mekong River was very nice, and the beach area were the tour first landed and spent close to an hour was lovely, as the view from the beach area of the mountains was magnificent, Then, we headed to the Pak Ou caves. The climb to the cave to the left of the landing is quite steep but well worth the climb, as this cave contains the nicest collection of Buddhist statues. The remaining climb to the cave on the right side of the mountain is not steep after climbing to the left cave. There is no need to bring flashlights as the caves are decently lit (although all of the guidebooks tell you to bring a flashlight.) Do wear sneakers or comfortable walking shoes. After visiting the Pak Ou caves, the van ride to the Kuang Si Waterfalls is fine. The Kuang Si Waterfalls is much more than waterfalls. It is a large park that contains rescued black bears and the viewing areas are great, especially the one that one is behind the glass-enclosed area. There are other animals and birds in this park as well as lovely flowers. The waterfalls are very nice and you should climb to the top of the trail, as I guarantee that you will be taking pictures of the numerous waterfalls as you go through the trail. As you can see, this is a full day tour and you should return back to Luang Prabang close to sunset, around 5:30 PM (if you do this tour in the winter months). Please know that this was my second trip to Luang Prabang and it was worth re-taking this Viator tour. I highly recommend doing it if you plan to visit Luang Prabang. Also, do not miss having great Laotian-French fusion food when you visit this lovely place.

1 DAY Mekong Cruise to Pak Ou Caves. Kuang Si Waterfalls . Local Villages
This tour was better than expected. It included *everything* there was to see and do in the area. Our guide’s English was much better than the other tours we have been on, and he was very friendly and knowledgeable. Everything was efficient, timely, and accommodating. The food was the best we had during our stay, however,!! ..it was at an elephant RIDING camp, and I do not support that, and neither should you. I was not aware of this fact during booking, or I would not have gone. If they would stop supporting this place, and instead an ethical, conservation one, it would be a top 5-star rating.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • A must for lovers of history, culture, and river cruising, the Pak Ou Caves are a Luang Prabang favorite for good reason.

  • There are simple bathrooms at the caves, usable for a small fee.

  • The Pak Ou Caves are a religious site and on the chilly side. Long pants and covered shoulders will improve the experience all around.

  • Both upper and lower caves are accessed by steps, which can get slippery during the rainy season.

  • If visiting the upper cave, you’ll need a flashlight—bring one (or install an app).

How to Get There

Set where the Mekong River and the Ou River (Nam Ou) meet north of Luang Prabang, the Pak Ou Caves require a boat to access. You can charter a tuk-tuk to Ban Pak Ou (it’s about an hour’s drive) then pay the small fee for a motorized canoe across the river. Alternatively, sign up for the colorful 2-hour river cruise from Luang Prabang: boats leave from a pier near Saffron Café on the peninsula.

When to Get There

The Pak Ou Caves are open to visitors year-round, and the river is navigable both during the rainy season and during the dry season. During the dry season peak, between November and January, the caves can get unpleasantly crowded: chartering a private longtail boat for your group and leaving early may help to beat the crowds.

Artisan Villages of the Mekong

The Mekong River cruise is a major part of the appeal of a Pak Ou Caves tour and, whether you’re chartering a longtail or joining a slightly larger boat, stops at artisan villages can add charm. Popular destinations include Ban Xang Hai, a whiskey-making village, and Ban Xang Khong, where locals make mulberry leaf paper and weave silk.
