Southwark Cathedral Tours

star-3.5
17 Reviews
Southwark Cathedral
With a prime location on the south bank of the River Thames, looking out across London Bridge, Southwark Cathedral is one of central London’s oldest churches, dating back to the 12th century. Its official name is the Cathedral and Collegiate Church of St. Saviour and St. Mary Overie.

The Basics
A popular inclusion on London sightseeing tours and hop-on hop-off bus tours, Southwark Cathedral lies close to some of the city’s most popular sights. Artisan market and foodie hot spot Borough Market is right next door, as is the legendary London Bridge. The Shard is just a short stroll away, and the ships the Golden Hinde and HMS Belfast are moored along the Thames.

Things to Know Before You Go
  • Admission to the cathedral is free, but visiting may be restricted when services or other activities are taking place.
  • Visitor facilities include restrooms, a gift shop, and the Refectory Café.
  • Southwark Cathedral is wheelchair accessible.

How to Get There
Southwark Cathedral is located at the southern end of London Bridge in central London. The nearest tube station is London Bridge (Jubilee and Northern lines), just a 2-minute walk away.

When to Get There
The Cathedral is open daily to visitors, and worshippers are welcome to attend daily services or hourly prayers. A popular time to visit is for one of the festive carol concerts during the holiday season.

William Shakespeare and Southwark Cathedral
Southwark’s biggest claim to fame is its connection with William Shakespeare, who lived in the parish until 1613. The cathedral houses a monument to the playwright, which depicts characters from his works, and hosts a birthday service for the Bard each year on April 26. Shakespeare’s brother, Edmund, was buried at the cathedral in 1607, and Shakespeare’s famous Globe Theatre is just a short walk away.

Borough Market and beyond

star-5
While Borough Market is firmly on the tourist trail, I will show you the hidden history that not even the locals know. Starting from the famous market we will wander and discover the heroes and villains that makes Borough such an amazing place. Behind the waterfront, with Tate Modern and the Global, there is a maze of streets, with 2,000 years of history to uncover. We will hear about Shakespeare and his rivals, who inspired Dickens and Bankside's dark side! An excellent way to find out more about this amazing part of London, with a qualified London tour guide. Guarantee only small groups, meeting Covid-19 safety measures and away from the crowds in the quiet backstreets. This is a family friendly tour.

Sizzling Southwark

Sizzling Southwark

As Southwark was London's 1st borough, it supplied the City of London with all its needs. For centuries it became the entertainment centre for the City's young men looking for a bit of fun - from inns and brothels to theatres and bear baiting, from beer to food, Southwark had it all. But Southwark was not just about supplying its wealthy neighbour: living side by side with Southwark's poor were the Bishops of Winchester living in their grand palace and supporting the magnificent St Saviour's church, as Southwark Cathedral was then known. Nowadays, there is so much to see: the soaring arches and dramatic ceilings of the cathedral; the ruins of the once lavish Winchester Palace, the glorious Globe theatre and the life sized replica of the Golden Hinde, the boat that circumnavigated the globe in the 1570s. Add to that the fascinating tales of Southwark's history, intriguing explanations of phrases like Winchester geese and the truly spectacular views across London, you have a great tour!
