Covent Garden Market, London, WC2

The Basics

Covent Garden’s original purpose was as a convent garden, where Westminster Abbey monks would grow fruit and vegetables, some 500 years ago. In the 17th century, architect Inigo Jones built St. Paul’s Church (not to be confused with the cathedral) and the Covent Garden Piazza and the area started to take shape. In the streets around the market came theaters, coffee houses, and restaurants, turning the area into a nightlife hotspot.

The market arcades, built in the 1830s, were home to fruit, vegetable, and flower sellers. The original market was moved out of the city in the 1970s, and the arcades were redeveloped into stores and cafes. Nowadays, the piazza is famous for lively street performers, while the surrounding streets—Floral Street, Neal Street, Long Acre, and Mercer Street—offer some of the best shopping in London. Guided walking, bike, and taxi tours visit the area on a regular basis. It's also a stop on hop-on hop-off sightseeing buses.

Covent Garden’s Hidden Gems: A self-guided walking tour
Absolutely lovely tour! We loved it - we had visited Covent Garden before but never knew of all these stories surrounding it. It was a great experience getting to know the area a bit better and the tour itself was very entertaining.

London Pub Walking Tour of Covent Garden
We had an absolutely fantastic time on the tour. All of us are local to London and we all learnt so much about Covent Garden and it’s history. The selection of pubs and history behind them was amazing. Would definitely recommend.

Boogie Shoes Silent Disco Walking Tours Covent Garden
It was like you became invisible when the music was playing. We sang at the top of our voice and danced for the whole tour. Absolutely loved it and loved watching everyone’s reactions to our group! We made lots of people smile! Such a feel good activity and the 3 in charge we’re great fun.

Curse of Covent Garden - Outdoor Treasure Hunt via Text Message
An enjoyable way to find out interesting facts about the areas we were exploring - from wall mountings/plaques etc - to the discovery of parks and streets we hadn’t visited before. This was a fun couple of hours.

Pub Tour of London's West End: Trafalgar Square, Covent Garden and Soho
Our guide was attentive, friendly and full of lots of historical knowledge about the pubs in London, as well as the process of beer making. The only downside is that one of the pubs required that a person be age 21 to enter despite the drinking age being 18. The pub did finally allow my son to enter with the group but it was a bit embarrassing.

Pub Tour of London's West End: Trafalgar Square, Covent Garden and Soho
We enjoyed this historical tour of London's West End pubs! It was nice to be able to have a glass of wine instead of beer nice I'm not a beer drinker. Everyone else in our group were beer drinkers and they said they enjoyed the experience of the different brews and the history of the making of beer! Loved all the historical pubs and the tidbits of info that we would not have otherwise learned without our amazing tour guide! Thanks for a fun experience!

Pub Tour of London's West End: Trafalgar Square, Covent Garden and Soho
The gentleman leading the tour was extremely knowledgeable, personable, and allowed us to really enjoy the tour. The places he took us were not "popular" or "touristy" places, but places that showcased some of the oldest pubs of the area as well as allowed us to sample beers that we otherwise wouldn't have had. Very impressed with the tour!

Pub Tour of London's West End: Trafalgar Square, Covent Garden and Soho
Despite the weather being a little chilly, this was a great tour to sign up for leading into the New Year. The tour size was just right (maxed out at 12 people) and Nick, our guide, was very friendly and adept at both informing us about the pubs and beers we were experiencing, but making us feel like a cohesive group. Highly recommend!
