Coniston Water Tours

Coniston Water
The Lake District’s third-largest lake, Coniston Water is known for its depth and its scenic surrounds, which offer prime conditions for water-based activities. The area’s human history reaches back to the Bronze Age, and more recent notable locals include Victorian thinker John Ruskin and the writers Arthur Ransome and Beatrix Potter.

The Basics
Enjoy Coniston Water by renting a motor boat, row boat, or paddleboard, or opt for a cruise on the Victorian Steam Yacht Gondola. You can also explore the lakeside cycling paths and hiking routes or taking a tour to neighboring Hawkshead, a quaint village that was a favorite spot of both Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter.

To see a variety of sights, opt for a tour that combines Coniston Water with nearby Windermere or a multi-day excursions that combines the area’s lakes with visits to more distant attractions such as Hadrian’s Wall or Castlerigg.

Things to Know Before You Go
  • Boating equipment can be rented at the Coniston Boating Centre; wheelchair-accessible boats are available.
  • The Steam Yacht Gondola is not accessible for wheelchair users.
  • It can get cold out on the water, even in summer, so bring layers.
  • Make sure to pack a waterproof jacket and sturdy walking shoes for exploring the Lake District.

How to Get There
Getting around the Lake District is easiest by private vehicle. The closest major train station is Windermere, which is connected to Coniston town by the hourly 505 bus. Many tours of the area offer round-trip transportation from major cities such as London and Liverpool.

When to Get There
Coniston Water is an impressive sight at any time of year, balmy in the summer and full of dramatic views in the winter. The Steam Yacht Gondola operates between March and October, and private boat rentals are available all year round.

Beatrix Potter’s Lake District
Beatrix Potter fans can get the most out of their visit to the Lake District by booking a tour that combines iconic sights, like Coniston Water and Windermere, with literary landmarks such as the Beatrix Potter Gallery and Hill Top farm, where Potter was inspired to write and illustrate stories like The Tale of Tom Kitten.
