The Basics

Set just outside the town of La Fortuna, this cascade is a must-see for visitors to Arenal Volcano National Park. From the parking lot, the descent down the staircase to the falls only takes roughly 20 minutes. A longer trail winds through the rain forest and can be traversed on horseback, giving travelers an opportunity to spot toucans, monkeys, and other tropical creatures. At the bottom, adventurous visitors can swim in the clear waters below the fall, while others can picnic along the rocky shoreline or snap pictures of the scenery.

Most La Fortuna Waterfall tours include a visit to the adjacent Arenal Volcano National Park, where you can head out on a volcano hike, get your adrenaline pumping on a waterfall-jumping and canyoning adventure, or float down the river on a safari tour.

Unforgettable
Our guide was Roy and he was FANTASTIC! Very knowledgable and informative. He was very attentive to the needs of our entire group. We did all 3 activities and it was challenging. We are in our 60's but I would do it again. Very good experience.

Roy was a great guide and lunch was very good. Weather didn't corporate with us, which is disappointing, but that's the rainforest.

Full day Arenal Volcano, La Fortuna Waterfall and Hotsprings
We had an amazing time on this tour. We were able to hike to the arenal falls, arenal volcano, and hot springs all in one day. We were also able to meet some native Costa Ricans and learn their culture as well as see wildlife along the way. Our guide was great at teaching about wildlife and plants as well as history. I was able to do this with my seven and nine year old.

Full day Arenal Volcano, La Fortuna Waterfall and Hotsprings
It was a great experience allowing us to see such beautiful parts of La Fortuna Arenal. The hike to the waterfall is pretty tedious but the views make it well worth it. Bring water shoes. Lunch was good and then going to the volcano was spectacular, it’s such a beautiful area. Lastly the hot springs were the perfect way to end the day. Carlos was a very knowledgeable tour guide and made the day super fun.

Roy was an awesome tour guide! This is a long day but super fun and we learned so much. Definitely worth the price! Saw so many animals at the hanging bridges forest and the waterfall is just beautiful (although a bit crowded).

2-in-1 Arenal Volcano Combo Tour: La Fortuna Waterfall and Volcano Hike
We had a busy and exciting day. This tour was so much fun and informative. The lunch was absolutely delicious. Bring bug spray and sun screen since you are outside all day. Worth every cent.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Bring a bathing suit, sun protection, bug spray, and comfortable shoes.

  • Swimming is allowed, but only in pools well away from the potentially dangerous currents produced by the falls, especially during the rainy season.

  • Keep in mind that the staircase down to the falls is steep and sometimes slippery.
