The Basics

Head down to the jetty after sunset, alight into one of the silent electric boats, and glide over the dark river to watch the amazing light show provided by these little luminescent lovelies. While it’s possible to make your way to the small fishing village of Kuala Selangor on your own, many visitors find it convenient to join a guided tour from Kuala Lumpur, which often includes hotel transfer, a boat ride to see the spectacle, and a waterfront seafood dinner. You can also combine the fireflies display with an afternoon visit to Kota Melawati (Fort Altingsburg), where you may be able to spot silvered-leaf monkeys.

Glittering Night : Kuala Selangor Fireflies & The River of Life Tour
We really enjoyed this tour. Our guide, Rajan TQ was very knowledgeable and shared much information about the local culture, history, and various buildings/businesses as we passed by. The stop at the Fort Altingsburg offered a beautiful overlook of the area and a distant view of the sea; the monkeys were amusing and fun to feed. We then stopped at the bustling riverfront restaurant area and enjoyed our dinner. The meal and facilities were very traditional and a new experience for us. We then boarded the jetty where we were transferred into the dark mangrove swamp to see the fireflies flash and twinkle like Christmas lights. Finally, we returned to Kuala Lumpur where we were able to see the final display of lights for the night at the River of Life. Overall, the tour was very enjoyable. The River of Life display was disappointing as it only played one song and lasted for only a couple of minutes. Our tour guide was wonderful and made this a great trip. He stopped at a roadside stand where we sampled lemang (sticky rice cooked in bamboo) and coconut water. This was an unexpected highlight of the trip. I would recommend this tour and Rajan TQ as your guide.

Kuala Selangor Fireflies - Batu Caves Temple- Malawati Hill DayTour With Dinner
I really enjoyed this tour. Our driver was very helpful and informative. The batu caves and the fireflys were both impressive, but the highlight was feeding the beautiful and relaxed silver leaf monkeys. Oh and the seafood was delicious with a nice view over the river, way too much for us to finish. Thank you so much this was the highlight of my Malaysian trip

Kuala Selangor Fireflies - Batu Caves Temple- Malawati Hill DayTour With Dinner
Although in the first part of the tour it started to rain heavily in the Batu Caves, everything else went really well. Our guide, Mr, Zain was of a warmth, friendliness and professionalism that made us feel that we had made the best choice in choosing this tour. I can only recommend this tour and this company.

Kuala Selangor Fireflies - Batu Caves Temple- Malawati Hill DayTour With Dinner
We had a lovely time. Our pickup was prompt.Azman our guide was excellent and knowledgeable. He gave us a fantastc time. Our first stop was at Batu caves, then to Melwati Hills where we took many pics with the monkeys. Then we had dinner and went for fireflies boat ride.Wow it was superb.Only reason why I hav taken a star off is because we all thought that dinner at restaurant was poor.We would have preferred if they had charged us more but had given us a choice of what we wanted instead of picking something from a set menu which was not to our liking. However overall it was a beautiful experience.

Things to Do in Kuala Selangor

Situated off the beaten tourist path, this village at the mouth of the Selangor River maintains a traditional atmosphere that feels worlds away from the big city. The fireflies might be the biggest draw, but there are plenty of other attractions in the area as well, including the 19th-century Bukit Melawati fortress, Sri Shakti Temple, and the outdoor sanctuary of Kuala Selangor Nature Park.
