The Basics

The pass can be traversed on foot, by bike, or by traditional jaunting cart (pony trap), and can be seen as part of guided and self-guided half- and full-day Gap of Dunloe tours from Killarney. The Gap of Dunloe is bookended by two pubs: at the south end is Lord Brandon’s Cottage, while Kate Kearney’s Cottage—supposedly named after a previous resident who poured out poitín (a traditional moonshine popular in Ireland) to parched travelers—is at the north end. Due to the narrowness of the road and the presence of walkers, sheep, and horses, driving is not advised. Private tours from other destinations along the Ring of Kerry, including Kenmare, Cahersiveen, and Sneem, can incorporate the Gap of Dunloe as well as Ross Castle in Killarney National Park.

Gap of Dunloe Tour ( Boat, Bus & Carriage)
The views from all along this journey were spectacular. Our boat and carriage guide were both very informative. Unless you can hike miles uphill at a quick pace, get a carriage

Challenging myself on a timed 7 mile hike, and I haven't done anything that intense in over 4yrs. I had from 11a-2p and I was done at 12:50p. What a blast and with the rain made it even better. And the boat ride our guide was the best, had us all laughing for days!!!

We had the Luck of the Irish the day of our tour…it was simply gorgeous out!! We had an amazing time traveling by boat across Loch Lein. Our captain Donell and his golden retrievers were excellent guides! He shared much info and folklore along the way! Highly recommend!!

The Gap of Dunloe Full-Day Tour from Killarney
Such a beautiful hike! I loved it. I did it with my 9 year old son. We went in the first week of April and got wind, a little hail and rain, and a little sun burn. It took us about 2 1/2 hours to do. We were glad to have our ponchos and water resistant shoes. Gloves, a neck covering and some layers kept us comfortable. The boat ride back was super easy going the first 2/3 of it, but then we hit wind and then for about 15-20 minutes we were drenched as the boat hit waves. It was so cold! Our guide had us put a tarp over our laps but like I said, we were drenched. Our guide was very fun and it was a great adventure, but if the guide says to pull out the tarp, I recommend pulling out your ponchos too.

The Gap of Dunloe Full-Day Tour from Killarney
Overall we had a fine time. The walk through the gap took two and a half hours but we weren't expecting the walk from the end of the gap to the boat to take over another half hour more. We thought for sure we had missed the only boat back to the pickup point but the luckily the captain was half an hour late himself. He wouldn't let us board just by showing him the e-ticket, we had to present the physical copy, which luckily I was able to find at the last minute. The boat ride back was intense at times (it was a cold, windy day) but enjoyable overall and unforgettable, even if in a "what have we gotten ourselves into" way.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • A one-way walk along the length of the pass, from Kate Kearney’s Cottage to Lord Brandon’s Cottage, typically takes about 2.5 hours.

  • Wear comfortable footwear and bring rain gear in case of showers.

  • Choose to end your tour on a high note by adding an optional boat ride across the Lakes of Killarney.

Tips for Crossing the Pass

Crossing the pass on foot requires a moderate level of physical fitness. If you don’t feel up to the full hike, simply turn back at the head of the gap. It’s also possible to take a jaunting car from Kate Kearney’s to Lord Brandon’s and walk back from there, or join an organized tour that includes pickup, either by bus or by boat, at the end of the route.
