Diego Rivera House-Museum (Museo Casa Diego Rivera) Tours

Diego Rivera House-Museum (Museo Casa Diego Rivera)
Visit this museum to see Diego Rivera's early childhood home, which has been turned into a museum dedicated to his life and work. Alongside original artworks and the personal effects of Rivera—one of Mexico’s most influential muralists and artists—you may also see temporary exhibits from other artists.

The Basics
Inaugurated in 1975, the 3-story Diego Rivera House-Museum displays a robust collection of Rivera’s personal belongings, artwork, and restored furniture. Come to learn more about Rivera as both person and artist. Witness the development of Rivera’s artistic stylings, thanks to some of his early sketches, and take the opportunity to explore the colonial house’s courtyard and garden, before continuing your tour of—or visit to—Guanajuato City. Guided tours of the area often stop at the museum.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • For Diego Rivera fans unable to see his work in Mexico City, Guanajuato’s Diego Rivera House-Museum is an excellent alternative.
  • Children under 12 enter free.
  • This restored colonial house in Guanajuato appeals to history fans as well as art enthusiasts.
  • Diego Rivera’s House-Museum has an elevator for those with mobility issues.

How to Get There
Street side parking near the Diego Rivera House-Museum is tight, but like many of Guanajuato’s attractions, it’s easily reached on foot from the hilly city's downtown. Head towards Positos Street, a block or so north of the San Fernando Plaza, and walk east until you reach the museum.

When to Get There

The Diego Rivera House-Museum is closed on Mondays but opens Tuesday through Saturday from 10am until late afternoon. On Sundays, it closes in midafternoon. Visit at midday if the dry heat of Guanajuato gets too much; otherwise, stopping by in the afternoon may help you avoid the largest crowds.

Other Art Attractions in Guanajuato
If you want to conduct a self-guided art tour of Guanajuato, before or after a visit to the Diego Rivera House-Museum, head a block east on Positos Street for contemporary art. Or double back down the same street if you’d prefer to stop at the Camposanto Art Gallery or elpinchegrabador Print Gallery.
