Carretera Estatal 604 Guadalajara-San Marcos Gral. Lucio Blanco, Jalisco, 46762

The Basics

Little is known about the Teuchitlán tradition civilization that once lived at Guachimontones. It’s believed that the main pyramid was once used as a ceremonial site, with 52 steps corresponding to the Mayan calendar. Offering picturesque views of the town of Teuchitlán, the site also has some of the largest ball courts in Mesoamerica, on which ancient games were once played.

While travelers can make their own way to the pyramids, signage is typically in Spanish. If you don’t speak Spanish, consider booking a guided tour, some of which include round-trip transport and stop at other attractions in the region.

A great tour to Guachimontones
Alejandro was our guide and was extremely knowledgeable about the local area. If you want to skip the town of tequila but still want to see the Guachimontones I highly recommend this tour. This tour seems less popular and there were only two of us in the group so it was almost a private tour! We were able to stop in the small town of Teuchitlán on the way back for a very nice lunch at the town plaza.

Guachimontones Archaeological Tour
A must-see in the Guadalaraja region, as it is one of only three pyramids in the world. The guided tour with Berenice was excellent- she is a skilled guide and her tour was informed yet informal. I highly recommand!

Private Full-Day Tour to Tequila and Guachimontones
This was a fun day! Packed with a tour of the pyramids. Perfect for going with my 13 year old. And we were able to customize our day in tequila with a private driver which was great. Our driver was on time and very personable and we felt very safe.

Tour of Guachimontones Archeological Site & Tequila from Guadalajara
Luis was super informative. The pyramid were amazing and Tequila (the town and distilleries) were a perfect end to the day. Luis knows about the history of the area now and then. He is well-read and engaging. Also he was super responsive and thorough with details. Highly recomend this tour.

Mascota and Guachimontones Archaeological Zone Day Trip from Puerto Vallarta
Good driver though we had trouble understanding his English at times. He was very considerate of needing a few additional bathroom breaks along the way. Mascota was a place we might visit in the future. Guachimontones was very good and the museum there was modern and it was nice that they ran a movie in English. Our party of three agreed that it was worth the trip and no one we knew had been here before. Be ready that the drive is 6-7 hours each way depending on traffic; a driver picked us up on time at our hotel and we returned at almost 10pm. Seeing part of Mexico away from PV was good; we had visited the botanical gardens south of PV the day before, and this was a nice follow up.

Guachimontones Archaeological Tour
Amazing history, great tour mostly made so by our extremely informed tour guide! She was very knowledgeable, traveled and pleasant. Be sure to stress to tour guests to bring with them plenty of water and something to eat during the 5+ hours (we did! : )

Guachimontones Archaeological Tour
Our guide was knowledgeable and comprehensive and paid attention to varying needs among the guests because there was a short uphill walk. The site is unique, its history fascinating, and the museum a wonderful and surprising wrap up to the on site part of the tour. The driver, Saul, did a fine job and we really appreciated the all out effort of Veronice, our guide. The restaurant at the drop-off in town was meat-oriented and very good at delivering their specialty.

Private Full-Day Tour to Tequila and Guachimontones
I’m extremely grateful to the Irazú Travel Club and my guide Renzo for this activity! Normally the tour requires a minimum of two people but I’m here for work by myself and they made an exception. They also politely forewarned me that they only had a Spanish-speaking guide and asked if this was okay, and I agreed. My Spanish is basic and while I couldn’t have extended conversations with Renzo, we managed to get by and he was very patient and understanding. He’s an excellent driver and knowledgeable about the areas surrounding Guadalajara, taking me through the sugar cane fields to Guachimontones. The site is magnificent! The hike up from the museum is very steep but short and the views are spectacular. My distillery tour was at Tres Mujeres, a small artisanal facility and it’s fantastic! The showroom, cellars, the underground tasting room and surrounding agave fields are amazing. We then stopped at Cantaritos Cheche’s for a drink, another awesome stop that’s popular with locals. They have a large open patio and there was even a mariachi band performing but be warned, they free pour so if you’re a lightweight like me one drink if more than enough. We stopped once more for lunch before heading into Tequila itself. It’s picturesque but very touristy. The Jose Cuervo distillery has three tours a day that run 90 minutes, but the only English tour is at 11am so I skipped it. I’ll go back in the future because it seems like the kind of place that’s better to explore with friends rather than doing it solo. It was a lot to see in one day but worth it, especially with someone like Renzo to guide you along. Definite recommendation!

Guachimontones Archaeological Tour
This was an awesome trip for truly unique sightseeing. The tour operator was willing to accommodate a hotel pickup and it was only our group that day. The van ride was comfortable and the tour guide spoke excellent English and have a good mix of information with time for pictures, letting us experience the site at our own pace. Don’t expect a lot of shops…it is an archeological site that is relatively newly developed. A great day out though—every in my group thought this tour was fantastic.

When to Get There

Guadalajara is the city of eternal spring, so there’s never truly a bad time, weather-wise, to visit Guachimontones; however, there are few shaded spots in the archaeological zone. To avoid the hottest part of the day, stop by in the morning or late afternoon. The site is closed on Mondays.
