Royal Mile, Edinburgh

The Basics

Because it penetrates the very heart of Edinburgh’s UNESCO World Heritage-listed Old Town and is home to so many of the city’s star attractions, including St Giles’ Cathedral, the Scotch Whisky Experience, and Camera Obscura, the Royal Mile is a staple on Edinburgh sightseeing tours. Classic walking tours, Harry Potter–themed tours, and tours of the underground Real Mary King’s Close all cover portions of the Royal Mile, as do hop-on hop-off and ghost bus tours. Visitors based in Glasgow can take day tours to the city to see Edinburgh’s biggest attractions, among them, of course, the Royal Mile.

Royal Mile Guided Walking Tour in Edinburgh
We had a very enjoyable and informative walking tour around Edinburgh with Stuart as our guide. We were taken to places that we would have probably never found by ourselves, or have any inkling of the fascinating history that these places have. Three hours very well spent. Iain & Jan.

Really easy to find the team, the guide was excellent, he had a lovely way with him and great knowledge. The weather was superb so made it even better, the timing was great just fast enough to keep it interesting but slow enough to take it in.

My friends and I joined this tour in May 2021 and it exceeded our expectations. Stuart was very lovely and knows each corner of Edinburgh. The 3hr walking tour is worth every second of it. This is a must have when visiting Edinburgh, I recommend them 100%!

Royal Mile Guided Walking Tour in Edinburgh
Stuart was an engaging guide who gave a great introduction to the Royal Mile. He was also helpful pointing out things we may want to return to later in our visit, as well as good places to shop for authentic souvenirs. We really appreciated his knowledge of things along the Royal Mile as well as his recommendations for further exploration.

Incredible Tour With A Historical Figure

Royal Mile Guided Walking Tour in Edinburgh
What made this an experience I will never forget is that Stuart Usher was my guide. His great family donated the landmark Usher Hall to the City Of Edinburgh before being embezzled by a network of lawyers etc. I thoroughly recommend Stuart’s book which has featured on TV. His deep love for the city and the passion which with he explains the history of this magical city is an experience that will always stay with me. It was like doing a tour of Prague with a descendent of Mozart or touring Paris with a Royalfamily member. Highly recommended

Small Group Royal Mile Walking Tour with Optional Entry to Edinburgh Castle
We really enjoyed our day with Eddie on the Wee Red Bus. The bus was new and clean and comfortable, and the visits were just the right length at each stop. It was a lovely complement to Edinburgh urban experiences. Eddie was engaging and talked just the right amount. He also brought his own “mix tape” of Scottish historical songs which we much enjoyed. Great day!

Royal Mile Guided Walking Tour in Edinburgh
Richard was an excellent guide, taking us to parts of the old town which we had never visited before, or even knew existed. The warming hot chocolate in Deacon Brodie’s cafe, hidden away off the Lawnmarket, was very welcome. Lots of tales of old Edinburgh kept us entertained throughout the walk.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Wear sturdy walking shoes as some surfaces are uneven and sloping.

  • To avoid an uphill slog, start at Edinburgh Castle and walk downhill to Holyrood Palace, then use public transport or a taxi to get back up.

  • The cobblestoned sections of the street can cause difficulty for some wheelchairs, strollers, and mobility devices.

When to Get There

The Royal Mile is a much-frequented thoroughfare, and during the annual Edinburgh Festival in August, it is packed with visitors. If you can stomach the crowds, the atmosphere is truly something special with curbside entertainment courtesy of buskers and street performers.

Things to See on the Royal Mile

Many of Edinburgh’s most famous landmarks are situated on the Royal Mile. In addition to the palace and castle at either end, you’ll find other centuries-old landmarks such as St Giles' Cathedral, the Mercat Cross, and Canongate Kirk. It’s not all dusty old attractions, though—the Royal Mile is also the setting for the contemporary Scottish Parliament Building, a striking 2004-built concrete structure whose abstract shapes and forms take inspiration from such diverse references as Scottish landscapes and Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s paintings.
