The Basics

With knock-your-socks-off beauty and a promise of peace and solitude, the westerly region of Connemara holds great sway among Ireland visitors and locals alike. If you’re into outdoor adventures, take part in guided and self-guided nature walks and hikes around Connemara National Park. Or go sea kayaking around the Wild Atlantic Way coastline, where dolphins, seals, and basking sharks inhabit the waters.

You can also explore the region during sightseeing day tours from Galway, which often incorporate stops at Kylemore Abbey, Pearse’s Cottage, Roundstone, Derrigimlagh Bog, and Killary Fjord, as well as the Cliffs of Moher and the Burren.

The most memorial part of the trip had to be Kylemore Abbey closely followed by our driver/guide Gerry who was fantastic with his wit and great knowledge of the area, he made the tour so much better . The landscape of connemara is ever changing but always breathtakinly beautiful . We are so happy we took this tour

We ended up on this tour about a week into our 2 week stay in Ireland. What an amazing experience with someone who is knowledgeable! We felt covid safe and learned so much history and got to see some many amazing sites. What an experience that our kids will also have for the rest of their lives. Would highly recommend.

Connemara Day Trip Including Leenane Village and Kylemore Abbey from Galway
The trip lived up to my expectations- I could have done with just a bit more time at the Abbey-was a bit rushed to fit in everything. But overall a thumbs up from me!

The panorama of Connemara was very beautiful. The visit at Kylemore Abbey was also very good except that it was raining. Very good also the cafè-restaurant present at the site. Very satisfied with the tour.

Galway to Connemara National Park Day Tour
An excellent day out with loads to see and do! The guide was hilarious, really great fun and knew absolutely everything about Connemara. The hike was challenging, but I did manage to get to the top and back. I was going at a solid pace and was about 20 mins to spare before the bus was scheduled to leave. It was nice to know there were shorter loops if time got short, but I was confident to make it to the top! I got a quick lunch at the cafe at the national park, but I'd recommend taking a packed lunch to give more time on the hike. Thanks to driver Gerry for a fantastic day out!

Connemara, Kylemore Abbey or Connemara National Park day tour from Galway-Guided
Nice tour guide but good if can switch on the air-conditioner as we felt studdy in non-ventilated coach with sealed windows. Good if organiser can include both Kylemore Abbey and Connemara National Park in the tour

Shore Excursion: Full-day Connemara and Wild Atlantic Way Tour from Galway
Well designed and perfectly executed tour. Being guided and driven by a Connemara native was a huge plus. Every stop was timely and worthwhile. We enjoyed every minute. Kylemore Abbey and Gardens is well worth the trip. Connemara is spectacular. We would take this same tour over and over again. Highly recommended.

Connemara and Galway City Day Tour from Dublin
Excellent day trip. We were so lucky to have Darren as our tour guide. He made sure we saw every bit of the countryside and introduced us to locals along the way. He was so much fun and knowledgable! Paddywagon is always the way to go!

When to Get There

The best time of the year to visit Connemara is between June and October, when mild temperatures make exploring outdoors easier. July and August are the busiest months, so if you plan on visiting then, you may want to hit the most popular spots early in the morning to beat the crowds. In winter, Connemara has a stark, desolate beauty, and tourists are few and far between.

Connemara’s Hollywood Connections

Among the most picturesque villages of Connemara is Leenane, which is set on the edge of Ireland’s only fjord, and was the filming location forThe Field, a 1990 film starring Richard Harris. Elsewhere in Connemara, between Lough Corrib and Lough Mask, sits the village of Cong, which still retains a collection of traditional thatched cottages. It was here thatThe Quiet Man was filmed back in 1951.
