The Basics

Chichén Itzá is a UNESCO World Heritage site comprised of stone buildings in various states of preservation, all of which are connected by a network of roads called sacbeob. The three most well-known are El Castillo (Kukulcán Pyramid), the Temple of Warriors, and the Great Ball Court.

Visit independently or on a group or private day trip from nearby cities on the Yucatán Peninusla, which often combine a stop here with visits to Ek Balam, Cobá, or the town of Valladolid. Alternatively, choose a tour with access to the Mayaland Resort and a buffet lunch.

VIP Chichen Itza Private Tour
Our tour guide Jony did it all: picking up at our hotel on time, clean and luxury transportation, toll route to save time on the road, great knowledge about Chichen Itza, astonishing cenote experience, and most importantly (per my girlfriend), Jony took great photos. We are so glad we found this tour and it’s definitely a highlight of our first Cancun trip. Highly recommended.

Chichen Itza, Cenote & Valladolid Private Tour
Alberto, our guide, was incredible! He was knowledgeable, engaging, funny, and kind. Prompt pickup, great driving skills, fully stocked cooler, and clean van. Chichen Itza lived up to the hype and the kids loved the Cenote swim afterwards. The buffet lunch exceeded my expectations! Would definitely use this company again!

Chichen Itza, Cenote Ik Kil, and Coba Ruins Day Trip All Fees Included
My partner and I enjoyed our trip to Coba, Ik Kil and Chichen Itza! Our guide Alberto was very knowledgeable and friendly. Our group had an issue with tickets when we arrived to Chichen Itza which put a damper on the trip but overall it was not a bad experience, the food was okay and the van was clean.

Our Amigo tour bus was super clean. Marco our travel guide was excellent and spoke great English. Rodrigo our guide at Chichen Itza knew everything…a real historian. Everything about this tour met expectations. Do not skip the tequila tasting…very surprising flavors.

Chichen Itza Options with Sacred Cenote from Cancun
The excursions was good. The cenote and Valladolid stops whore a little unecessary as it was a little rushed. It would be better to only do Chichen Itza and make it a shorter excursion. Overall very nice and informative guides

Viator Exclusive: Chichen Itza Unique Entry, Buffet Lunch & Cenote English Tour
It was great experience with this tour that I purchased with this Viator on line. Every event was well on time with enough communications to keep us informed Pick up and drop off to our resort that was not in their schedule pick up point ,and still they managed to pick us and drop off precisely. The tour guide Marco was very informative with the history associated with Chichen Itza and very courteous man who took care of all our needs.
Best tour ever

Viator Exclusive: Chichen Itza Unique Entry, Buffet Lunch & Cenote English Tour
Freddy was an amazing tour guide. He brought the history of Chichen Itza to life with his knowledge and personality. He really grasped my attention with his passion for the Mayan history! Lunch with the local Mayan village was always a great experience! 100% recommend this tour for anyone wanting to see both Chichen Itza and one of the cenotes!
Good day trip covered lots in one day

Chichen Itza Day Trip from Tulum Including Cenote and Lunch
This was a very good trip all around and the tour guides were very good and informative. The day was broken up well so that you never felt like you were on the coach too long, I would maybe cut the Mayan shopping village back and give a more time for Valladaloid. The shopping part I was expecting locals to be selling their goods from stalls outside instead it was an extremely commercialised and slick set up and just as pushy as the stalls that align Chichen Itza.
Great tour and worth the money

Chichen Itza, Cenote & Valladolid Private Tour
Chose to do a private tour due to covid and it was worth it. Great tour guide with Carlos 1 and Carlos 2 - they were both brilliant. Very flexible and very informative and we learned a lot about the history of Chichen Itza and the cenote world. Would highly reccomend it.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Many tours are led by archaeologist tour guides, who are well-versed in Mayan culture.

  • The Ossario group and Central group are open to everyone; Chichén Viejo (Old Chichén) is only open to archaeologists.

  • Come prepared for the heat with light clothing, sunscreen, bottled water, and a hat.

  • This popular site can get extremely crowded—book an early-access tour to beat the crowds.

  • Skip Sundays, when the site is free to enter for Mexican nationals and incredibly busy.

How To Get There

Chichén Itzá is between 2–2.5-hours by car from Tulum, Playa del Carmen, and Cancun respectively. Visitors to those coastal resorts will have plenty of options for day trips to the archaeological site, and departures are also available from Cozumel and Merida.

When to Get There

The best time to get to Chichén Itzá is right around opening, before the crowds arrive and the sun is high in the sky. Some private tours and small-group tours offer early access to the ancient ruins. At sunrise and sunset on the spring and fall equinoxes, the corner of the pyramid casts a shadow of Kukulkán, a feathered serpent god, and creates the illusion of a snake slithering down the north side of the pyramid.

Nearby Cenotes

The Cenote Sagrado, a sinkhole gateway into an underground body of water 197 feet (60 meters) in diameter, is an impressive natural site at Chichén Itzá. However, you can't swim in it. Another nearby cenote is Ik Kil, and some Chichén Itzá day trips combine visits to these freshwater sinkholes on the Yucatán Peninsula with a stop at the ruins.
