This was an amazing day filled with adventure and beauty. Our Tour guide Derek was very knowledgeable and had a great energy. We also had a great guide Kaleo during the Waipio Valley part of the tour. We are very happy we took this tour because we were able to see so much in one day. The day is long but very much worth it! Definitely Recommend this tour.

Overlooking the valley was breathtaking, but going into it...I almost have no words for it. Like it was going back in time and hearing the history of it. Tour guides were amazing. If you really want some insight and see what most tourists don't see, this tour is a must!

This was an amazing experience. Dreu was so informative, entertaining, and funny. It's clear that he loves the island and knows so much in depth info about it. My entire group loved the entire tour. Being able to experience Waipio Valley was magical. Kaleo was awesome as our guide and driver in the valley. It was definitely a magical place, and I feel very grateful to have visited it. Swimming in the private waterfall was also really special, and I'm so glad we were able to do that. The waterfalls and lava tube were also gorgeous and fun to see/explore. Thank you for the once and a lifetime experience!

Longer time at private falls!

Small Group Waipio Valley and Waterfalls Adventure
Lots of driving, which makes sense since the island is so large, but you’re in the car longer than you’re at waterfalls. A little disappointed that we were only able to get in the water at the private falls for 30 minutes after driving all day. We had fun, and got to see a lot of the island and some really cool waterfalls, and took some pictures. I wish we got to stay at the private falls longer, that was our favorite part of the tour!! Make sure to bring walking shoes, because there is a bit of walking, a good amount of stairs, and uphill portions.

My husband and I loved riding down into the beautiful Waipio Valley and learning all about its history and vegetation. We enjoyed eating the delicious lunch provided with a view of the ocean. Our tour guide knew just where to stop to get malasadas for desert. The hike down to Akaka Falls was magical. The rainforest and Akaka Falls are awesome. We loved swimming in the private waterfall tour. The cool water was refreshing. We also loved getting to see Rainbow Falls in Hilo and getting to buy some delicious chocolate at the Hilo Candy Factory. Our tour guide was friendly and very knowledgeable about The Big Island!

Derekk was fantastic and the tour couldn't have been more fun. Hr was full of history and facts amd kept the tour moving all day.. Douglas drove us into the valley where he was raised. He was the coolest.. everyone knew him and many were his family. It was a great mix of magnificent views and captivating Hawaiian stories passed down from generation to generatio . We are active throughout a good portion of the day, either In a 4x4 going into the valley, swimming under a waterfall or climbing through a lava tube. This is a fun, fun, fun tour!

Wonderful 12 hour Big Island Trip

Dreu was such an awesome host/driver! He was funny, thoughtful, & very informative!! I wanted to do the horse excursion down into Waipei Valley, but with my husband's sore back, this all day event was a more comfortable option. The lunch was authentic Hawaiian and the sites were incredible, without too much walking. I highly recommend this educational drive, jumping in the water near the waterfall, and the macadamia nut ice cream after the mild 4 wheel drive down into the valley with breathtaking views!

I really enjoyed this tour. We got lots of background on the volcanoes themselves, the climate, history, etc. Our guides were very informative and we definitely learned alot. I liked the Waipio Valley and all of the waterfalls the best. You even get to swim in a private waterfall. I also got to try and purchase macadamia nut honey for the 1st time. I highly recommend this tour, you'll get some great experiences and some beautiful pictures.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Waipio Valley is a must-see for adventure travelers, history buffs, or first-time visitors to the island.

  • Remember to bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat.

  • Don’t attempt to drive a rental car into the valley; the road is extremely steep and many rental agreements prohibit it.

  • Hiking down to the black-sand beach requires a high level of physical fitness, but anyone can enjoy the views from the Waipio Valley Lookout.

How to Get There

The stunning Waipio Valley is located on the Big Island’s northern Hamakua Coast. The roads here are notoriously steep and should only be accessed by four-wheel drive, horseback, or organized tour (from Kukuihaele).

When to Get There

Since the views are one of the biggest draws, plan to visit on a clear, sunny day. November is the wettest month on the Big Island, and rain tends to impact how much of the valley is visible. Organized tours typically don’t run on Sundays.

Sacred, Mythical, Historical Waipio Valley

The Waipio Valley was once the home of many of Hawaii’s past rulers, and has great sacred and mythical significance. It was here where Kamehameha the Great (the first ruler of a unified Kingdom of Hawaii) was proclaimed the future ruler of the islands by Kakailimoku (a Hawaiian god). It’s also the site of several important Hawaiian temples, or heiaus.
