The Basics

If you only have time to visit one temple in Beijing, make it the Lama Temple (the Temple of Heaven isn’t really a temple). Inside you'll find five large halls, ornately decorated with Buddha statues in various incarnations, murals, and carvings. Many Beijing sightseeing tours include a visit to the temple, along with other Beijing attractions, such as the Summer Palace, Panda Garden, Jingshan Park, Beijing Zoo, and historic hutongs, depending on the option chosen.

Beijing Historical Tour II including Summer Palace, Lama Temple & Panda Garden
William was great! He was very accommodating and knowledgable. His English was extremely good. The van was clean. They had room for me to bring my luggage. At the end of the tour, he wrote down instructions for a taxi driver for me to get me to the right terminal at the right airport. The Summer Palace and Lama Temple were well worth seeing! Loved watching the Pandas! The only part of the tour that doesn't earn 5 stars was the silk and pearl factories.

3-Hour Private Walking Tour including Monk Blessing Ceremony at Lama Temple
Because they are nearby, we were able to visit not only the Lama Temple, but also the Confucius Institute and the Imperial College, and a nearby hutong as well. My guide managed it all calmly and professionally. I appreciated that she picked me up at my hotel and returned me there at the end and I was happy to pay the Didi taxi fares. It was a great way to spend my first morning in Beijing.

Beijing Historical Tour II including Summer Palace, Lama Temple & Panda Garden
We enjoyed this tour a lot. Summer Palace is beautiful and the Lama Temple is fascinating. We paid extra to do the boat entry and I thought it added something. But advised that the title is misleading. You tour through the grounds of the Summer Palace. You don't go into anything. If you are looking to really get into the Summer Palace, this isn't your tour. But all and all it was fun and our guide did a very nice job. I enjoyed it.

Tour was nice. Guide was incredible. It was very fast so adding at least an hour would help in slowing the pace.

Beijing Historical Tour II including Summer Palace, Lama Temple & Panda Garden
This was avery nice trip to different places of Beijing, with a very nice and friendly guide, who spoke very good English. It was also really good organized. The only little critic concerns the meal, it was fresher and lovingly arranged on the other tours.

When to Get There

The Lama Temple is open daily throughout the year with slightly reduced hours between November and March. While there’s no need to book a ticket in advance, it’s a good idea to arrive early in the morning before the tour buses. Avoid visiting on Chinese national holidays.

The Halls of Lama Temple

The Lama Temple complex comprises five main halls. Statues of the Future Buddha stand guard within the Hall of Heavenly Kings, while Past, Present, and Future Buddhas occupy the Hall of Harmony. A highlight for many is the 85-foot (26-meter) statue of Maitreya Buddha carved from a single piece of sandalwood, on display in the Pavilion of Ten Thousand Fortunes.
