Great Wall at Badaling

Yanqing Qu, Beijing, China, 102102

The Basics

Visit the Great Wall at Badaling on a day trip from Beijing, as part of a China highlights tour, or even on a layover; many packages include a restaurant lunch and a visit to a jade workshop, while a few also include cable car tickets. Some day trips combine the Great Wall at Badaling with nearby attractions, such as the Guyaju Caves or the nearby Badaling Ski Resort. Other additions include Longqing Gorge, which has an ice sculpture festival in winter, or the Ming Tombs, a grand imperial graveyard that’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Alternatively, opt to pair the Great Wall at Badaling with imperial sights in Beijing, such as the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, the Summer Palace, or the Temple of Heaven.

Amazing value for money
So booked this trip as I only had one day to see the best bits of Beijing. Expected a coach and instead there were only two of us in a taxi, perfect! The travel guide was also great, informative but not too intrusive. A perfect excursion and it helped that the weather was marvellous. The great wall was on my bucket list and didnt disappoint!

Beijing Essential Full-Day Tour including Great Wall at Badaling, Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square
The tour was well done. Our Guide was Liu and he was very good. He took a lot of extra steps to ensure a good trip. He also had a lot of knowledge. What we didn’t like is the lunch stop. Food was cold and poor standard. Rest trip was good with some jade store stop where we didn’t buy anything. Neither did others. So the store was very unhappy. It showed on their faces.

Great Wall of China at Badaling and Ming Tombs Day Tour from Beijing
Very informative and kind guide, nice and polite driver! We arrived early in the morning, so there were not many people, which made very easy to climb the Great Wall! Thanks!

Badaling Great Wall and Ming Tombs Day Tour from Beijing
We had booked a cruise around Asia And was looking for something to do whilst we were staying in Beijing for s few days, checked out trip advisor, like we all do, and found this great trip which was a great price. We meet out guide at our hotel which had been confirmed the day before. The Great wall has been on bucket for a few years, but we have done it also the Ming tombs and a traditional tea ceremony. Would book with Viator again

Badaling Great Wall and Ming Tombs Day Tour from Beijing
I liked the Tombs and the Great Wall but definitely not the Jade shop. Total waste of time. I wished I had stayed longer on the wall instead of having the mandatory shopping stops...

During our Visit to Great Wall, the guide was very clear and knowledgeable. Our group had all of our questions answered and much more information and invite for the area and the history of China.

Beijing Private Day Trip to Badaling Great Wall and Ming Tombs
The guide decided that the Badaling Tour was too busy so he took us on the Mutianyu Wall Tour. Our guide was not allowed to take the tour with us at that part of the wall, so were on our own touring the wall. Entrance fees were not included, but the guide did purchase tickets for us while we looked in the museum. Visiting the Great Wall was an awesome experience.

Private Day of Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City And Badaling Great Wall
Our tour guide Yuly - was fantastic. She picked us up promptly at 8:30 am and filled us in on all of the locations we would be going that day. We would start off at Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City, and then off to the Badaling section of the Great Wall. And, where we would eat for lunch (which was included). She was knowledgeable tour and filled us in with all sorts of historical information - which we loved. As well as, answered our questions about different things. She was awesome!

Beijing Private Tour to Badaling Great Wall and Longqing Gorge with Boat Ride
The gorge is beautiful and the wall is obviously worth seeing. Vivianne was a great guide. She's very considerate and her English is solid so she can share a lot of information with you on so many topics if you're interested to chat during the drive. The driver was also lovely. Badaling offers the best views of the wall but it's the most crowded.

Beijing in One Day: Day Trip from Shanghai by Air - Great Wall & Forbidden City
We had one free day on a group trip to Shanghai. Everyone said it wasn't possible, looking at us dubiously when we shared our plans going back and forth to Beijing. But it was, and a very long day, but very worth it. Picked up at 6:00a, returning after midnight (return flight was delayed). Saw a lot and it was very organized. Favorite part was seeing/walking The Great Wall. Drivers picking us up from Shanghai hotel and Beijing airport were very nice and helpful. Could have used a map/notes outlining airport procedure & terminal location, but we got there just fine. Our guide was a very cheerful, sweet young woman who wanted us to have a good time, but she hustled us right by Tianaman Square without noting it, redirecting our attention toward The Forbidden City (seemed on purpose). If we hadn't individually noticed what we were walking by, we would have missed it (even though it was promised on the itinerary & we wanted to see that part of history). We also spent a lot of time at The Forbidden City, which started looking the same--how many thrones did the Emperor really need! She offered a virtual reality upsell, which we took, that we didn't feel was worth it. It took time and the graphics were pretty unsophisticated. She also talked very quickly with a very strong accent and I had to ask her to slow down/repeat herself several times until I just surrendered, smiling and nodding, missing much of the information. Lunch was tasty and a nice, quick break from all the swift walking, followed by jade store. Beautiful offerings, but prices didn't seem favorable. Then to The Great Wall, which we were most looking forward to but were running out of time. I would have definitely swapped way more time from the Forbidden City to the Great Wall, for sure! It's beautiful and remarkable and worthy of admiration. Note, the bricks are very uneven--some 1-brick height, most 2-brick height & some 3-brick height, where I had to hoist myself up with hand on knee (we're both 5'8"). Also, guide was constantly trying to pose us in "sweetheart" photos, initially appreciated, ultimately distracting from what we were there to experience. Reminder: most restrooms did NOT have toilet paper, so bring your own & toilets are holes in the ground so for those with balance issues, bring your cane. I wondered how older people coped. All in all, we saw a lot, tour front-to-back was very organized and we felt as safe as one can feel in a foreign country without knowing the language.

Beijing Badaling Great Wall and Ming Tomb Small-Group Tour with Lunch
We left Beijing early but to be expected with the traffic, first stop and by the time we arrived, a welcome stop at the Jade factory, I know, I had read the reviews and expected the sales pitch but I was pleasantly surprised by the items on offer (sales items at the back of the shop near the coffee bar!) Hubby's credit card took a bashing here with pandora style beads and family ball, a must apparently as we have the perfect family of 4! lol Then off to the WALL, our guide was a character, bubbly and boy could she walk fast, cable car lift up and an hour to walk the wall, as a hiker, I didn't think this would be enough but with all the little steps up and down an hour was plenty and the over priced beer (roughly 8.50) at the wall was dutifully paid as we were knackered and welcomed the final toboggan down! We went off for local lunch and for a scenic tour back down the mountain, a lot of snoring later, we arrived at the Ming Tombs, interesting but once in a lifetime so it ticked the box and we headed back into the city. The Tea Room, I know another sales pitch and a taste of proper Chinese Tea but they were good and Hubby's credit card took another beating. Oh well.... as I sit at home drinking it now whilst reviewing, was it worth it, yes definitely .... Thank you for a memorable day

Great Wall and more!

Beijing Badaling Great Wall and Ming Tomb Small-Group Tour with Lunch
This was a great tour for the price. We started at the Ming Tomb which was beautiful (short visit, but that’s really all that’s needed); moved along to the jade factory which was very interesting - and given time to shop there as well before having lunch in the adjacent restaurant (lunch was very good and plentiful); then we visited the Great Wall which was fantastic, but be prepared to hike from tower to tower, it’s more exhausting than it’d seem; after wearing us out at the Wall, we finished with a tea ceremony which was very pleasant. Paul was a great tour guide and gave us a lot of information. The only option I’d prefer to have in the future is a tour with no children... being stuck in a van with screaming kids through traffic is also quite exhausting.

  • The wall can be bitterly cold in winter. Wear gloves, a warm coat, and a hat that covers your ears.

How Long Is the Great Wall of China?

Historians date the Great Wall of China to the time of Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of a united China, in the third century BC, but some of its fortifications are even older than that. After a 5-year survey at the turn of the 21st century, the Chinese government calculated the length of the Great Wall, including all its different branches and constructions from different eras, at 13,170 miles (21,196 kilometers). That’s more than twice as long as previously thought.
