The Basics

Coach tours from Banff and Calgary typically stop at Johnston Canyon and other beauty spots in the Canadian Rockies, such as Moraine Lake, Victoria Glacier, and Takakkaw Falls. While many travelers hike the trail independently in summer, in winter it’s better to go as part of a guided tour, as you’ll need special equipment to navigate the trail safely. Many multi-day excursions exploring Banff, Jasper, and Yoho national parks also visit the canyon.

Excellent. Fun. Educational. Informative!
Excellent tour with a kind and energetic and brilliant guide - Erin. Learned so much and had fun. Bus ride was non stop learning too! Totally worth paying for the guided tour. Don’t do this walk without ice cleats!

See a lot of Banff in one day

Full Day Adventure Tour | Banff, Lake Louise & Johnston Canyon | Winter
Sean was an AMAZING guide. He was friendly and knowledgeable. We covered so many hot spots in one full day with plenty of time to experience each location in full. The ice was mushy on Lake Louise and thus only walked around the lake, but was wonderful! We walked to the upper and lower falls at Johnston Canyon, got great views at Lake Minawaka and Two Jack's. Had a fantastic time! Strongly recommend!

The evening Johnston canyon ice walk was amazing! The tour guide was awesome and gave us lots of interesting information about the canyons and surrounding area! The walk was beautiful and was even prettier when we all turned our head lamps off and embraced the light off of the moon. Highly highly recommend this tour!

I had a wonderful time on this evening walk, it was beautiful and the moon made the ice sparkle like diamonds. I learned a lot about the rock and the mountain and surrounding wildlife, definitely happy this was part of my trip. Heidi was great and very knowledgeable!

Loved learning the history of the area from our guide Jeff. Jeff was not only knowledgeable but was also a great photographer. Johnston Canyon Ice walk was more beautiful in person than any photo I could post. Dress warm and enjoy the view.

Johnston Canyon Icewalk
What a fantastic tour. Our guide Erin was so knowledgeable. She told us facts and stories about the area from the time we started the tour till we were on our way home. I’m not going to lie but I thought I was in better shape than I was (I had dressed with far to many layers for the -2 temp)but Erin gave us plenty of time to enjoy all the stops and catch our breath. The sights were truly breathtaking. I highly recommend this tour.

Johnston Canyon Icewalk
Our guide Erin was wonderful and very knowledgeable. In the van on the way from Banff to the Johnston Canyon, she talked about the city of Banff and the Canyon. During the icewalk, she paid attention to everyone in the group even helped to attach the snow cleats to our daughter's boots. She carried the cookies and hot cocoa to the upper Falls for everyone to enjoy. The hot cocoa tasted especially good in the winter wonderland! We loved this tour thanks to Erin.

Great tour! Marie was our guide and she was knowledgeable and so fun to chat with during our tour. Unfortunately, Johnston Canyon was closed on our day but the company pivoted nicely with another short and lovely hike. We biked 26 km on the Bow Valley Parkway which was beautiful and fun! Overall it was a fantastic way to end our last day in Canada! Our group highly recommend this fun tour!

Dale/Radventure is awesome

Full Day Adventure Tour | Banff, Lake Louise & Johnston Canyon | Winter
Our tour was small so he was able to pick us up right at our bed and breakfast but normally there is a pickup spot at 9am. Dale was our driver and he had a great and flexible itinerary mapped out for us. Lots of freedom to make additional stops and tones of information about local sights and attractions. He knows all the mountain names too! All the supplies like skates, crampons and snowshoes ere provided and he can provide rental stuff on other days when you aren't touring with him. This tour was my favourite and we took a lot while in Banff. Highly reccomend.

When to Get There

The Johnston Canyon trail is one of the busiest in Banff. If you’re going in summer, prepare for crowds—the trail usually has fewer hikers before 9am and just before sunset. For a more serene experience, opt for a nighttime winter tour, when the frozen canyon is silent except for the sound of your footsteps on the snow.

Hiking at Johnston Canyon

Choose from several Johnston Canyon hikes. A round-trip walk to Lower Falls is about a mile (1.6 kilometers), with an elevation gain of around 164 feet (50 meters). The round-trip trek to Upper Falls is about 3 miles (5 kilometers)—the path gets steeper after Lower Falls. More experienced hikers might continue another 2 miles (3 kilometers) to the Ink Pots, shallow mineral springs bubbling to the surface in a high mountain meadow.
