Antilla Shipwreck

Malmok Beach, Aruba, Aruba

The Basics

Launched in 1939, the World War II Hamburg America Line SS Antilla operated for less than a year before running aground after its crew set it on fire to avoid its capture by the Dutch. Today the wreck makes for a great snorkeling and diving opportunity, as it acts as a safe haven for the abundant sea life of the Caribbean. Lobsters, sea turtles, and manta rays are regularly seen here. The site is a common destination on snorkeling, scuba diving, and sailing tours of Aruba.

Excellent Experience
We had a great time. Jose was our guide he was very patient while we got ourselves comfortable with water bobs. He took us to the shipwreck which was a spectacular sight. He dove in several places and showed us starfish, frog fish and giant turtles. We fed fish to the birds. Jose was an excellent guide. Very knowledgeable. Would definitely recommend the experience

Jose was timely to pick our group up and Alex was a very knowledgeable tour guide. We had a blast! The sea life was stunning and the ship wreck was amazing to explore. You won’t be disappointed! We’d do it again if we were staying longer!

This was an amazing mustn’t miss excursion. It was just my husband, myself and our guide Jesus. The seabob was so much fun to use and Jesus dove down deep to bring us up starfish and conch to check out. We saw so many different kinds of fish and sea turtles!

Sea Bobs sure are more fun than snorkeling. I had a knee replacement so snorkeling was too much strain. The sea bob was great for my knee - no stress. Easy for me as a first timer. Juan our guide took us to a few different reefs to see different fish, eels, and turtles. We drove out to the ship wreck with no effort and zipped around. Big fun. Thanks Juan who taught us to use the sea bob in 5-10 minutes. Will recommend to anyone young or older.

Seabobing was so much fun! Alex, our guide/merman, was incredible. We opted to pay for the GoPro footage after their recommendation and we love all our videos and pictures. My boyfriend isn't a strong swimmer but felt confident with working the seabob. The shipwreck was stunning and we wish we could have stayed longer. It was amazing to go in and out of the water, seeing all the spoils of the Carribean Sea! Definitely a highlight of our trip.

Best snorkeling experience ever. It does take a lot of energy so keep that in mind and maybe not the best for children. I would definitely recommend 100%

GREAT!!! We saw sea turtles and schools of fish. We are from NYC. City folks. We are beginners. Our tour guide which slips my name at the moments was amazing in guiding us and teaching us in the fly. I’ve recommended this place to guests we’ve made friends with in our hotel.we also did the GOPro options and our guide took over three hundred pictures!!! LOVE IT!!!

So much more fun then regular snorkeling! Get to dive deeper and see more of the sea life. Ship wreck was far but don’t even notice as the seton does all the work for you! Even got to see a few turtles and pet them underwater. Our tour guide was Alex and he was great. Very friendly and experienced. Definitely recommend this tour and as mentioned before better then snorkeling off the boat. Pick up and drop off was included from the hotel. Alex was on time and nice! Don’t recommend for little kids I would say at least 12 and up and would suggest being at least a decent swimmer (even though season does all the work for you).

Best excursion ever! We were in water for 2 hours. Jose, our guide was awesome. We fed pelicans, saw turtles and various fish. Ship wreck was amazing. Several people who were on board asked about our seabobs. I was so glad to be in the water instead of on the boat. The seabobs were so much fun. They are kinda like a Minnie jet ski. Our group was only 7 and we had 2 guides. They only thing I would recommend would be to wear the wet suits they provided. We didn’t wear them because the water was warm. Now we know the wet doubts provided protection from the sun. We burned even though we used sunscreen. Wear the wetsuit. Even though we burned, it was the best excursion we have ever gone on.

Antilla Shipwreck Seabob Tour
We thoroughly enjoyed this adventure! Our guide took us to many locations to find starfish, sea turtles, and of course the Antilla Shipwreck. He was always so watchful to make sure we weren't too far off, and especially when boats were coming our way. So much fun, but whew we were worn out! Would definitely do this again!

Things to Know Before You Go

  • The Antilla Shipwreck is ideal for divers of all experience levels as well as snorkelers, as it sits in just 66 feet (20 meters) of water.

  • Due to the choppy waters and strong current, it’s recommended that even experienced swimmers and snorkelers wear a lifejacket when exploring the wreck.

  • The shipwreck is accessible only by boat, not from shore.

  • The wreck is divided into two parts, so divers can experience two different dives at the same wreck.

When to Get There

Aruba experiences its calmest weather from April to June, while its rainy season runs from December until March. But overall the island enjoys good weather year-round, making any time a good time to plan a diving trip there. Plus, because it’s located on the far southern edge of the hurricane belt, Aruba typically isn’t subject to severe storms.

Malmok Beach

This rocky and rugged beach runs alongside and around jagged limestone and rocks, and is a popular spot for snorkeling and diving; it’s the starting point for many Antilla Shipwreck excursions. While the beach does feature soft white sand, keep in mind that there are also plenty of pebbles and stones.
