The Basics

No surprise, this stellar national museum gets crowded. Consider purchasing a skip-the-line ticket, which lets you head right inside. To maximize your experience of the Rijksmuseum, visit with a licensed art historian, either as a private guide or on a group tour. Or combine a canal cruise with a skip-the-line ticket, allowing you to see the museum on your own schedule.

Museums tour
Angelo was a great guide. He gave us so much information and the museums would not have been worth it without knowing the history and stories of the art. You can tell Angelo loves what he does and I highly recommend this tour and him as a guide!

Rijksmuseum Amsterdam & 1-Hour Canal Cruise
Very good price. The canal cruise is totally worth it, especially in the evenings. You'll have an audio guide and nearly no waiting time. Booking the canal cruise ticket was a bit complicated because you had to go to a tickets and tours shop near Amsterdam central station to book a time slot. Rijksmuseum was amazing too and is a must see!

Private Rijksmuseum Tour: Rembrandt, van Gogh, Vermeer and more!
This tour was one of the best art museum tours I've ever been on. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and led us through Dutch history by picking various pieces of art. I loved that she picked some well known masterpieces but also included some lesser known artists, art pieces and even furniture of the time. She explained the significance of the art we saw, not just in terms of art history but also how they reflected politics and culture of the time. I felt I was on a journey through time.

Skip-the-line Rijksmuseum Amsterdam Guided Museum Tour - Private Tour
We booked a two hour private tour of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, We had four in our group and the tour was exceptional. Anita, our guide, was very knowledgeable and was very attentive to our questions. The tour was well worth the price given we were able to skip the long lines and get an up close personal look at the museum pieces.

Rijksmuseum Private VIP 2.5-Hour Tour with Art Historian, starting at 9 AM
My 3 hour private VIP guided tour of the Rijksmuseum was the absolute highlight of my time in Europe. Kees, the guide, is an art historian who is a fount of knowledge about the Dutch Golden Age, of course, but also about particular paintings, the way they came to be, lives of the painters and their families and modern research. He made the time vivid and alive. Cant recommend highly enough!

The Rijksmuseum’s Notable Works

The Dutch Golden Age in Holland was a time of prolific art and powerful commerce, and some of the most famous paintings on display at the Rijksmuseum include works from this time period. Be sure to see Rembrandt's “Nightwatch” (1650), showing the militia led by Frans Banning Cocq. Other featured 17th-century Flemish and Dutch masters include Jan Vermeer (“The Milkmaid,” “Woman in Blue Reading a Letter”), Frans Hals (“The Merry Drinker”), and Jan Steen (“The Merry Family”). Beyond the celebrated paintings, other notable galleries include Sculpture and Applied Art (Delftware, dollhouses, porcelain, furniture), Dutch History, and Asiatic Art in the Asian Pavilion, which includes the famous 12th-century bronze statue of a dancing Shiva.
