The Basics

Extending for around 11 miles (18 kilometers) across the Var and Bouches-du-Rhône regions east of Aix-en-Provence, Sainte-Victoire Mountain was immortalized by postimpressionist painter and Aix favorite son Paul Cézanne, who painted the rocky outcrop countless times during his life.

The area is popular with hikers as well as visitors taking bike tours, and the panoramic views from the summit make the climb worthwhile. The prominent cross, known as the Croix de Provence, atop the ridge was installed in 1875 to ward off a smallpox epidemic that was threatening France at the time. It is engraved in French, Greek, Latin, and Occitan, the lingua franca of Provence.

Fun way to see Saint Victoire!
Fabulous experience! Colin was a wonderful guide and read our group well. He gave us lots of options for the experience (different paths to choose from) and stopped frequently to support our group. It was about 15 miles. Just the right amount of challenge. The scenery was stunning and this was a great way to see Saint Victoire. Must do!

Fun and beautiful way to experience Provence

E-Bike tour of Sainte Victoire Mountain, Aix-en-Provence
What a great way to spend a morning! We thoroughly enjoyed the break from crowds and the city by experiencing Provence on a mountain bike. Colin was an excellent guide , the bikes were well maintained and the park at the base of Saint Victoire was very accessible. There are two options available, one easy accessible route and a more challenging route involving some single track with climbs and descents. We loved the electric bikes as we covered the challenging 30kms with ease and enjoyed fabulous scenery. The trip was well thought out and Colin was genuinely a great guy.

Cezanne obsession understood!

E-Bike tour of Sainte Victoire Mountain, Aix-en-Provence
I now understand why Cezanne stayed out here and loved painting the st victoire mountains. Surreal and just beautiful. Even though it was winter and wasn’t perfect weather, still couldn’t distract me from the herbs growing everywhere, the olive trees, the evidence of hogs scurrying and digging for food. Colin was the perfect guide… non imposing and so helpful. Although I love biking, the e bike( my first time on an e bike) allowed me to look around and admire the amazing scenery and not have to concentrate on going up hills and slopes. Must do!
